Athletic Championship Rings

If your child has recently won a championship in any sport, this is something you can do for them on your own if you wish. You can order championship rings from a company, but you should know it is not going to be cheap. However, it can make an incredible gift for your child if their sport is important to them, and you think championship rings might be something they would enjoy. You could have them made to resemble other types of special sports rings, and you can have the school color for the stone if that is at all possible. They may not wear them forever, but they will probably save them long into the future so they can show them to their children and even their grandchildren.

Using the Refiner Golf Club For a Better Golf Swing

Filed under: Amateur Sports, Golf, Outdoors, Sports Products — fredster @ 10:40 pm

Ask any serious golfer about golfing training aids, which ones they like or used or have heard about to help them to gain a better golf swing, and many times they will tell you about the Refiner golf club because the thing just plain works. My golf drives used to be all over the inbounds fairway and out of bounds areas and my golf score was none the better for it I tell you. Talk about having no confidence every time I stepped on to the golf course.

But this swing trainer from Refiner Golf, this Refiner golf club, has made all the difference in my game, self esteem, and golf score.

When I first started using the Refiner club during practice sessions, my swing was pretty jerky but with just a couple of practice swings that worked to slow down my swing and make it more deliberate and more coordinated at each point, I absolutely nailed three drives at at about the 250 yard range or so. I highly recommend this training aid. Now when someone asks me about my favorite golf training aid, I tell them about the Refiner golf club.

How Surfing Became a Sport

Filed under: Amateur Sports, Articles about Sports, Outdoors, Surfing — Tags: — surfnwho @ 3:54 pm

Surfing began when people used to lie down on hard wood boards and surf in Hawaii. Lieutenant James King who wrote journals on Captain Cook and completed them after his death set the first record. The surfboards were made out of huge and heavy wood, which were difficult to maneuver. They were substituted by lighter balsa wood surfboards in 1940s and were relatively easy to maneuver by the surfer. If you are prone to swimmers ear, wear a neoprene head bonnet so you won’t need a cure for tinnitus. The boards were later made out of polyurethane foam, polyester resin and fiberglass cloth with multiple layers of wooden strips. The latest technology in surfboards now is the epoxy or carbon fiber surfboard.

Swell is important for surfing. When the wind blows over a huge area of water, called the wind’s fetch, the water wave rises, called the swell. The stronger the wind is the more the swell. Surfers can find the perfect spot where there is a low pressure system being experienced by a large coastline. A moderate strength offshore wind can form a perfect wave without small breaks. The topography of the seabed beneath the wave also affects the wave formed.

David Beckham Videos

Lots has been made of David Beckham videos over the years, from his technique to his never-say-day attitude to his nasal, almost muppet-like voice. His presence on the front pages of both sports and entertainment magazines over the past decade has made him an almost omnipresent figure, and Beckham videos of everything from underwear modeling sessions to flubbed penalty kicks can be found all over the place.

Recent Beckham videos probably show a side of the superstar that he maybe wanted to keep hidden from public view. These videos are from his time in America with Major League Soccer’s Los Angeles Galaxy, and they show Beckham in an unflattering light.

You see, Beckham’s famous never-say-die attitude (as previously mentioned) simply seemed to vanish into thin air once he realized he wasn’t going to get his way on every small issue with his new club. Gone was his committment to play 90 minutes as hard as possible every time out. Gone was his committment to fitness and training. Gone were the wins he was accustomed to from his time with Manchester United and Real Madrid. And perhaps most importantly, gone was the respect of his teammates.

The Beckham videos that show this stunning lack are easy to find. Just check out MLSnet.com and scroll through the archive of 2008’s season, and you’ll see a Beckham that was playing at maybe fifty percent intensity from about game fifteen onward. This was not Beckham the celebrity or Beckham the footballer: This was Beckham the spoiled brat who wasn’t getting his way.

It was a transformation that was patently obvious to anyone watching the games, and was stunning to those of us who’ve followed Beckham’s career for nearly two decades. This guy was supposed to be different; he was supposed to be a competitor who didn’t give a damn what you thought of his off-field habits. He was supposed to be a winner and a leader, a veteran of multiple championships who could rally his inexperienced team around him.

He was anything but, and the Beckham videos show as much. Guys earning 1/100th his salary were running around, past and through him, and King David couldn’t be bother with putting up even the most rudimentary effort to stop it. Then when his teammates called him on it, as reported by Grant Wahl in his fantastic book “The Beckhman Experiment”, Beckham had the indecency to deny that he was putting in a half-hearted effort. If one could concoct a series of events designed to undermine the prestige of the world’s most famous footballer, it would look very much like this.

Happily the Beckham experiment is almost over, as he’s expected to return to Europe rather than see out his contract in the US. It’s good for the Galaxy and good for MLS, and probably good for Beckham as well.

Proper Golf Stance

Filed under: Articles about Sports, Golf, Sports — G M @ 10:33 am

Jack Nicklaus once said -

“If you setup correctly, there’s a good chance you’ll hit a reasonable shot, even if you make a mediocre swing. If you setup the ball poorly, you’ll hit a lousy shot even if you make the greatest swing in the world.”

Your stance in golf is also referred to as the address, or set-up. It is the foundation of your golf swing.

When you build a house, you start with the foundations, and it needs to be built well. A proper golf stance is key to creating a good golf swing. If you get it wrong, you will never develop a consistent golf swing.

A great way to develop a correct stance for golf is visit a golf professional. Within a short time they will have those foundations built so that you can build the rest of your golf swing with confidence.

A few convincing answers to the question “What are the benefits of exercise?”

The modern lifestyle has spoiled many of us to the point that we need our doctors to chide us on the benefits of exercise. We’ve become so sedentary, we don’t even need to leave the couch to change a TV channel. Hey, we’ve the remote! Decades ago, kids couldn’t wait to get outside and ride their bikes on the weekends or after school. Adults might choose to walk to work, as not everyone had the luxury of a personal car. Both adults and kids have taken up the sedentary lifestyle with gusto!

However, there are consequences. A third of the U.S. population is now obese, with more and more kids struggling with excess weight problems. Heart disease is on the rise, along with hypertension, problems with anxiety and sleep disorders. So, if you get into a discussion with a friend or your kids on the benefits of exercise, here are several convincing facts with which to make your case.

1.One of the benefits of exercise that most people have no trouble relating to is its effectiveness in controlling weight. Regular exercise burns calories, which is the bottom line in maintaining a healthy weight.

2.Regular exercise helps tone muscles and prevents the flabby look. Again, most people find flab an unattractive and unwelcome development. When your muscles are toned, you tend to retain much of that youthful strength later on in years. Look at Jack LaLane!

3.Another of the universally appreciated benefits of exercise is better looking skin. This is due to good circulation, keeping that youthful complexion rosy and well supplied with a healthy flow of blood.

4.Along with nicer looking skin, regular exercise helps keep your heart healthy and prevents a host of health problems due to poor circulation. High blood pressure means that your blood vessels are constricted, causing your heart to work harder. You can more readily develop plaque accumulations which may lead to a heart attack.

5.Improved lung function is yet another of the sterling benefits of exercise. Next time you see your doctor, ask him or her to check your oxygen levels. It’s a simple, painless test which measures the oxygen capacity of your lungs. Good lung function is a classic case of ‘use it or lose it’.

Perhaps the benefits of exercise are best summed up in a single word: longevity. With a regular, preferably daily regimen of at least 30 minutes of exercise, you’re automatically addressing each of the five points outlined above. Start when you’re young and stick with it throughout your life. If you’re young now, you’ll retain your looks far longer than a peer who is the perennial couch potato. A lack of exercise does have a cumulative effect over the years. You become more likely to prematurely develop serious health problems. On the other hand, if you exercise regularly, you’ll probably live longer and enjoy better health well into your old age.

You’ve got to admit, these few facts about the benefits of exercise are convincing. To your best health!

The Odd Sport of Sumo

Filed under: Martial Arts, Wrestling — Tags: — surfnwho @ 8:03 pm

Sumo was known as Sumai in the 8th century. Back then the rules involved were less in number and men used to fight till death. That is the reason why the wrestler who looses in a match is referred to as Shini-tai or dead body. Even today some of the shrines conduct ritual dance where a man wrestles with a Kami or a Shinto deity. This contest was known as Sumai no Sechie or Sumai party. This ritual was also held in the imperial court and it was a must for the representatives of every province to attend this ceremony. Sumo was also a part of the training for the warriors and that’s the reason that originally sumo wrestlers were samurai.

This martial art originated in Japan centuries ago and has a great religious importance in the country. It has some traditional rituals involved such as meditation where the wrestler cannot sleep, which is part of the Shinto religion. Sumo wrestling of Japan even has influence on martial arts of its neighboring countries like Korean Ssireum, Chinese Shuai jiao, and Mongolian wrestling.

NY Giants Fan Club

Filed under: Football — Don Don @ 3:19 pm

Showing your devotion to your favorite football team is a fun and important part of football. People dress up in their teams colors and have memorabilia in their houses. They also join their team’s fan clubs. A benefit of joining the fan clubs is that they often have free merchandise and tickets. They also often have things for children so they can be involved in showing their support just as much as the adults.

When you sign up to be a member of a fan club you get, among other things, a membership ID that lets you into the events. It can take a while for your ID to come in so most of the time your receipt can act as an ID until it arrives. Many of the fan clubs also offer free stadium tours.

Fan clubs have many opportunities for fans to meet each other and talk about what events are coming up. They also offer discounted items for members when the fan clubs meet. When the kid’s fan clubs meet they are allowed to bring one parent with them and access into the event is first come first serve.

Fan clubs are an excellent way to show your devotion to your team and to meet other people who share your interests. They offer opportunities to be more involved and to get things like signed photographs. They are also inexpensive to join and are worthwhile of you want to become more involved.

Used Mud Tires for Your Off Road Racing Vehicle

Filed under: Sports — andystealth @ 5:16 am

If you race or even just drive an off road 4×4, then you know how big their tires are and that you really can’t buy them at regular tire stores. They use mud tires, which are usually quite expensive, especially if you have to purchase a pair or a whole set. Used mud tires are a great way to save money if you know where to find them and inspect them for quality.

In face if you know how to find good quality used mud tires, you can save around 50% or sometimes even more over new mud tires! There are also retreaded mud tires out there that perform just like new ones but come with substantial savings, not to mention environmental benefits (instead of taking up space in landfills, when you retread tires, they are put back to use on a vehicle again).

Check out our used mud tire resource site at http://usedmudtires.org/ and see if you can’t start saving some serious money on your next set of off road racing tires.

Cardio Workouts Tips

Everyone wants to look their best. To do that, often times, one has to look their best. Of course, more important than your particular aesthetics is your health. As the saying goes, nothing is more important than your health. Clearly, I’m talking about exercise and its benefits, which, I’m guessing, you don’t need to be completely re-informed about. However, quality cardio workouts are often misunderstood. Here are some tips to help your cardio workouts gain effectiveness, and hopefully, your enjoyment of them.

The phrase “cardio workouts” have fast become commonplace in our culture. However, most people forget that “cardio” is not exactly a word, but instead an abbreviation of the longer word “cardiovascular”. Cardiovascular refers to its system in your body - your blood delivery system - heart, arteries, etc. In other words, cardio workouts are designed not to burn fat or calories, but more specifically increase the healthiness of your cardiovascular system. In fact, most experts agree that cardio workouts are not the ideal way to burn fat. Burning fat is usually best done with low impact, long-term workouts - such as a ten mile walk. Cardio workouts on the other hand, or moderate to high impact designed to elevate your heart rate for a shorter period of time.

Now, if you are interested in losing weight and improving body image you might not care about cardio workouts then. After all, you are looking for the most effective ways to lose weight. However, cardio workouts are still integral to any weight loss exercise program. The improvement that your circulation gets, the health of your arteries will have a direct effect on your fat burning exercise routine. In other words, the healthier that your blood system is, the better you will burn fat (not to mention, the lesser your risk or blood disease, heart disease, heart attacks and strokes).

Your cardio workouts should bring your heart rate up and sustain it for 30 uninterrupted minutes several times per week. Your optimal heart rate will differ based on your age and body size. Good examples of cardio workouts are running, biking, and other high impact exercises where you move your whole body. Yoga and strength training, while important exercise programs, will not help your heart and cardiovascular health. Regular cardio workouts will improve your heart health, your overall strength and endurance and help lead you to the healthy and fit body you have always wanted.

ACC Basketball

The Atlantic Coast Conference is probably the most storied NCAA basketball conference in the country, and arguably the most successful. Four teams from the ACC have won the NCAA tournament - Duke, The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, North Carolina State University and The University of Maryland at College Park - and several others, such as the University of Virginia, Wake Forest University and Georgia Institute of Technology have all made the Final Four. It’s a murderer’s row of schools with tradition and passion for the game, and they’ve produced some of the most outstanding professionals in addition to their success in college.

ACC basketball was where Michael Jordan, for one, cut his teeth as an undergrad. He played for the University of North Carolina for three seasons, winning the national championship as a freshman and being in consideration for NCAA player of the year as a junior. He didn’t win the award - fellow ACC basketball player Ralph Sampson of the University of Virginia did. Sampson obviously didn’t have the impact in the National Basketball Association that Jordan did, but he was arguably a better college player, leading the Cavaliers to three straight Final Four appearances and dominating in a way no big man had since Bill Walton of the University of California at Los Angeles.

In recent years the ACC basketball landscape has been much the same as it was thirty years ago. The “Haves” are the likes of University of North Carolina, Duke and Wake Forest. Other programs such as the University of Maryland and Georgia Institute of Technology have had two to five year spurts where they compete with the big boys, but they haven’t put together dominant programs that compete year-in, year-out for decades. Maryland may eventually get there - they have one of the most progressive athletic departments in the country and a rabid fanbase - but you can only say “might,” not “definitely will.” ACC basketball is so competitive that there’s no such thing as a sure thing.

So while the landscape hasn’t changed much at the top, it’s been rearranged and expanded a bit in the middle and bottom. ACC basketball added three programs this decade: Boston College, the Virginia Institute of Technology and the University of Miami. The decision was made in order to expand the conference’s regional footprint, and all three programs joined the ACC at the expense of the ACC’s biggest rival - the Big East Conference. As a result there is significant bad blood between the two.

Of course, that bad blood makes for exciting games. Whenever and ACC basketball team meets a Big East team, you can rest assured both sides will be giving their all for the full 40 minutes.

My favorite football player of all time is NFL legend Barry Sanders. His entertaining running style made the Detroit Lions a fun team to watch on TV even when the rest of the team wasn’t very good. He ran for over 1000 yards, made the Pro Bowl, and was named to the NFL All-Pro First or Second Team every season of his 10 year career. He finished his career in second place on the all time rushing yardage list and remains in third place on that list today.

How to ride a motorcycle and find where the fish are

Filed under: Cycling, Fishing, Outdoors, Sports — Terry A @ 3:31 pm

The idea of riding a motorcycle is to allow you the freedom of the open air while traveling. It can also be a very inexpensive way to travel or to commute as motorcycles get much better gas mileage than most cars. Learning how to ride a motorcycle is very important. You don’t want to be an inexperienced operator out there with so many other vehicles on the road. It comes down to learning the skills and believing in your ability to make it happen. Take it slow and easy and you’ll do just fine. After you learn how to ride a motorcycle you can even ride it to the lake.

How to find where the fish are is something a lot of newbies to fishing ask, frequently. Before you attempt to catch fish, you need to find out where they are. Fish are found nearly everywhere there is water, food, oxygen, and cover. You’re certain to be within close distance to a lake or stream that has fish in it. For a fisherperson this is good news but now you have to find the fish.

Not all fish live in the same kind of waters. Different fish tolerate different conditions better than others. Some include differing levels of salt, amounts of oxygen, amounts of food, water temperature, and hiding areas. The most distinguishing element of fish is salt. Freshwater fish don’t live in areas where there’s a lot of salt but there are some fish that need salt to survive. There are also some types of fish that can live in both saltwater and freshwater.

The only problem with motorcycles and fishing is you really need telescopic rods and lots of bungee cords to strap your cooler full of fish to the motorcycle.

South Dakota Lakes and Timeshares

Filed under: Fishing, Outdoors, Society and Sports — Terry A @ 3:20 pm

I’ve been fishing a fresh water lake, or at least going to the lake, since I was about 2 months old and I know I was fishing as soon as I could walk and demand my own pole. Lol, half of you won’t even know what this is but it was about a 10 foot long cane pole that I was given to fish with. Lot’s of adults used 15 to 20 foot cane poles for fishing back then. As much as I hate to admit it that was around 1949.

I’ve loved the fresh water lakes and fishing since I was a baby and would still rather spend time at the lake. My grandparents were ardent fisher people and so was my father. Some of the tips I know come from them, some I learned from pro fishermen or guides and others I learned on my own in Minnesota, Iowa and South Dakota Lakes.

When you’re wondering where to take your family on your next great vacation - choose South Dakota. It’s a state filled with family-friendly venues for kids of all ages. What’s more, you can enjoy some of mother nature’s best gifts positioned perfectly under a great mid-western sky. When you buy South Dakota timeshares you’ll be creating a childhood filled with wonderful memories of family times together or your older like me and want to be close to the lake but not have to do all the work

Fishing is my favorite sport. I suppose I should say fresh water fishing is my favorite outdoors sport as I don’t particularly like ocean fishing. Then again I’m not much on river fishing either. Probably because I learned to fish in freshwater lakes and that’s where I’ve done the bulk of my fishing.

I have a lot of fresh water fishing tips to come in this series on freshwater lakes, rivers and ponds.

Zinc nutrition

Zinc is one of the minerals that the body cannot function without. Keeping proper zinc nutrition is of essence if people are to lead healthy and productive lives. Zinc is a trace mineral and this means that it is required in small quantities in the body. Zinc is associated with immunity and people are advised to ensure that they consume it in their daily meals to boost their immune system. Zinc nutrition ensures that the body is capable of healing wounds fast.

People with a zinc deficiency will suffer from wounds that take long to heal. Cell growth also lies deeply in the availability of zinc in the system and so is cell division. This makes zinc a very important mineral to the body’s functions. Another importance of zinc in the body is that it enables people smell and taste. People who have lost their sense of taste and smell are advised to embark on diets that are rich in zinc. Zinc nutrition must be administered with moderation and there is a recommended allowance as follows; males above the age of 11 are supposed to take up to 15mg of zinc in a day. Females between the ages of 11 and 50 are supposed to consume up to 12mg of zinc in a day. 15mg is recommended for women over the age of 50 while 19mg will be best for those women who are either expectant or breastfeeding.

People looking at practicing the zinc nutrition must know the recommended sources of zinc. These sources include foods that are rich in proteins such as oysters, lamb, pork, beef, chicken, fish, peanut butter, legumes, and dairy products. It is important to know that foods such as vegetables and fruits may not contain the required zinc. People with a zinc deficiency will exhibit a number of symptoms that include hair loss, low appetite, retarded growth, and loss of taste as well as the sense of smell. These people will also loose weight and since their immunity is low, they will be prone to attacks by different diseases. Females who lack zinc will exhibit slow sexual maturity and in many cases, dwarfism is a resulting factor. Adolescents will experience delayed puberty and their skin will be rough.

In many cases, people with a zinc deficiency are prone to pneumonia attacks and their fingers will bear white spots. They will also have macular degeneration and their collagen will be reduced. Zinc deficiency has also been linked to stretch marks, short stature, strong body odors, paranoia, anorexia, depression, impotence, cataracts, and optic neuritis. Those who consume zinc excessively will suffer from abdominal cramps, vomiting and diarrhea and that is why moderation is vital. Zinc nutrition must therefore be taken seriously if people are to stay clear of these life-threatening defects. It is important to stay off alcohol as it lowers the zinc levels in the body. Milk is also known to curtail zinc absorption in the body and so people must go low on its consumption.

Zinc nutrition benefits include increased brain activity, low cases of common cold infections, healthy skin, improved appetite, and mood among others.

ERC Motorcycle Track Day- Michelin Power One Race Tire Review

Trackdays can be a lot of fun, especially when the day is completely dedicated to motorcycles. We were at Eagles Canyon Raceway http://www.eaglescanyon.com/2008/home.php and let me tell you, they know how to make you feel at home! The day was dedicated to bikes only (heaven!) and they catered in a great lunch from a local barbecue place. The weather was warm and the event was well attended, but it wasn’t crowded.

On this track day, we brought in a vintage stallion, a 2001 Honda CBR 929rr. Ahhh, fuel injection, 17 inch tires on both ends, titanium exhaust and a wheelbase of 54.5 inches. The 929 is a great street bike and it did win Formula Extreme that year, but that was a factory works bike. The 929 was not a club favorite, but I think a lot of that has to do with setup and the difficulty and price of obtaining aftermarket race parts. What made this bike so special for the track day is that we had fresh set of Michelin Power One race tires on both ends (120/17-17 “A” on the front & 190/55-17 “A” on the rear). Let me be the first to tell you that tires have come a long way in technology as these Michelin Power One’s use the new 2CT compound (dual compound technology). Ok – great marketing, but how do they really perform on a true street bike on a track day? We’re about to find out!

These new Power One tires warmed up rather quickly as I did not use tire warmers; hey, it’s a street bike, not a race bike. After two laps at moderate speed at Eagles Canyon the tires were absolutely predictable. The feedback was also coming in as the tires warmed up. The 929 does not have a slipper clutch and the bike would back it in to corners quite easily; I was very surprised as the “white knuckle” factor wasn’t a factor at all. I’m grinning. Into the third lap the 929 was diving into corners with little effort and confidence was growing. I could not believe how these Power One tires were transforming the ride of this 10 year old sportbike.

Confidence, stability and predictability are the three words that come to mind. The bike is on stock suspension, which is usually a nightmare on a track when you get going, but the tires really closed the gap on the short comings of the bike. The day reminded me of why the 929 was such a great bike and enjoyed by the riding public in its prime; it can do everything well and with confidence. However, the Michelin’s really made a difference. If you ride a street bike and enjoy track days, then the new Power One from Michelin is not only a logical choice, it is a sweet tire that will reward you!
Riding is believing and we are a complete convert! The new Power One Race Tire from Michelin is an outstanding tire and will not disappoint. They are very durable, provide an enormous amount of grip and are also available through Komodo Gear for an unbelievable price! You’ve got to check them out and shipping is free.

Fitness and Nutrition Go Hand in Hand

We see lots of professional athletes on television eating anything they want in copious quantities and yet looking fitter than they should considering what they are putting into their bodies. But this is just the result of great genetics and you need to remember that these elite athletes are really the exceptions to the rule. Most of us need to consider fitness and nutrition as one and the same thing in order to achieve even a modicum of athletic performance.

This means that in addition to all of that gym time you are putting in you need to be careful about what you are putting into your mouth. When we are young we tend to think that we will live forever and nutrition is not of paramount importance. In this country unfortunately there is a marked increase in childhood obesity because we are not

educating our children on the benefits of fitness and nutrition. Kids grow up eating junk food and sugary soft drinks and way too much juice and not nearly enough fresh fruits and vegetables like they should. Teachers and parents need to take a much closer and careful look at this glaring deficiency in our children’s nutritional upbringing.

The bad habits our kids develop carry on into their teen years and later into their adult life. Obese children become obese teens who become obese adults. The risk for heart attacks and clogged arteries and diabetes becomes life threatening for these obese people. Studies have shown that they live shorter lives. The ones that do make it into their golden years are beset with a multitude of health problems. These problems could have been avoided with earlier training in fitness and nutrition in their social strata.

If you teach a child to eat raw broccoli and carrots at an early age, that is what they will crave for the rest of their lives. Their muscle density and bone strength becomes superior and they end up becoming the elite athletes among their peers. Not only do children whose parents focus on fitness and nutrition have superior physical strength, endurance and agility, but their mental agility is also enhanced. They are able to focus on their schoolwork better and generally get way better grades.

Fitness and nutrition should be mandatory educational courses for our kids from pre-school through high school. Unfortunately many school cafeterias around the country continue to serve lunches and snacks that are high in saturated fats and calories and low on nutrients. It is of vital importance that we as a nation respond with urgency to this serious problem that involves our most prized resource, our children and their very future.

We cannot continue to ignore the benefits of fitness and nutrition education at an early age. The very future of our nation depends on our children. It is only right that we should do everything we possibly can to make sure that they are receiving the very best fitness and nutrition courses and motivation that we can give them.

Fitness Machines

Studies are constantly being released concerning America’s health. Yep, the facts are in, ladies and gentlemen. We’ve got a long way to go. This can’t be a surprise to anyone. Stop what you’re doing, and glance about at those amongst you. Are they ripped and lean, or do the majority of them sport a spare tire. Some of the ones I see on a daily basis appear to have a spare SUV tire. That’s not a good thing. How can this pandemic be remedied? Well, there’s pretty much only one way. It’s all about proper diet and fitness. These two imperatives must be addressed seriously. If you have been letting your health slide, it’s time to STOP. All it takes to get started is a little bit of knowledge and some basic equipment. Fortunately you get to choose from free weights, to aerobic supplies, to yoga balls, to fitness machines. It’s all out there if you just look for it.

I spent most of my life not caring about fitness. There wasn’t anything to motivate me. Even today, I’m 31 years old and have a fast metabolism. Therefore I’m never overweight. Typically I eat a certain amount each day to maintain my weight. Now, on the other hand; I also want to be certain I’m actually healthy. This hit me a few years back. I think it was watching all those UFC matches. That stuff gets me psyched and ready for action. Suddenly I was shopping for free weights and fitness machines. I wanted to have everything I needed to stay fit from home. Personally folks, I can’t stand the gym scene. Their fitness machines are gross. Just think about the process. Someone sweats all over a machine, and then you get on it. Nice huh? Yeah, and that’s even if you’re able to get on the darn machine. Sometimes the popular fitness machines stay occupied for hours. It can truly be an irksome process.

If you are looking to get in shape, then I suggest some brief research first. What are you looking to improve? Are you craving a total body workout, or maybe just wanting those abs in shape? Any way you cut it, you can learn all you need to on the web. Find out the proper forms for each exercise regime. This is crucial. Also you may want to check out Dick’s Sporting Goods for discounted fitness machines and free weights.

Exercise Equipment

You have to get the exercise your body needs to stay fit and live long. If you’re not working your body hard at your job, chances are that you probably aren’t getting the exercise you need. You can go to a gym, but today, most people don’t. Gym exercise is said to have peaked in 2006 and hasn’t come back since. Why? Most people are now setting up their own little home gym. It takes but a little space and some equipment (you’ve got your own shower and closet). If you were going to the gym, invite some friends over when you work out at home. If you want to meet people like you did in the gym, try out the net - there’s always somebody who wants to meet you on the net. (I get invitations to meet people every day, in every way, but that’s another story.) In a home gym you don’t have to wear the latest workout fashions, resulting in cash savings. You don’t have to wear anything (!) in a home gym. And if you’re a TV junkie, your can watch the tube while you work out. You can play the music you like. With a home gym and the right exercise equipment, you can have fun and get fit and healthy all by yourself.

The point of exercise is to use your muscles. When you use your muscles, you use up energy available in your blood and stored in your fat. That’s why overweight people who diet and exercise lose weight faster than those who only diet. Now, you could do calisthenics and forget about the exercise equipment, but calisthenics will take you only so far. Then, too, you don’t get the same feedback that you do with modern exercise equipment. It’s harder to set your goals with calisthenics. Running in place for ten minutes, for instance, might use up energy and work your legs, but how fast are you running? How many yards have you run in those ten minutes? You can’t tell. With a treadmill you can tell. The feedback you get from exercise equipment is its major advantage over calisthenics or isometrics or any other exercise you can do between yourself, the walls and the floor. This doesn’t mean you shouldn’t have calisthenics as part of your workout. Combining calisthenics with workouts on your equipment gives you the best results.

Most people make a workout on their exercise equipment the major event of the exercise period. Those who are seeking strength will concentrate on weightlifting. You can get a weightlifting set, or you can get an exercise machine that emulates weightlifting. Most like the latter because they don’t have to keep adding or removing weights from their barbells and dumbbells: a turn of a knob sets the resistance in pounds for you. And, with a weightlifting machine, you don’t need as much room as you do for a weight set. There’s also the benefit of not marring your floors when you drop a weight and set it down. The machine absorbs it all.

For those seeking the benefits of running, you can get a treadmill, an elliptical exerciser, or a stationary bike. Any one of these will give your cardio-respiratory system all it needs. Most people prefer the treadmill for purely cardio-respiratory workouts. If you want to strengthen your legs and gluts, the elliptical exerciser or stationary bike is a better choice. If you have joint problems, an elliptical exerciser is best for you. If you want to harden your gluts, go with an upright stationary bike. For people with back pains, a recumbent stationary bike is best.

If you’ve got the space, you can use all of them. A folding treadmill can save you room. Whatever your choice, shop around (prices range from hundreds to thousands), choose what’s comfortable for you and be sure you have enough space. Whatever your choice, be sure you use it. Use your home gym, your exercise equipment – after all, that’s why you’re buying it! Get in shape, rain or shine!

Some Sports Bobble Head Dolls Are Worth A Lot Of Money

Filed under: Collectibles Sports — Tags: — Jim @ 7:05 pm

A few years ago several of the American league teams began giving away bobble head dolls of star players to the fans. They would give out a certain number of the dolls on a first come first serve basis. The bobble head dolls have a vague resemblance to the player and they are wearing the uniform and number of the player. Now that the promotion has run for several years collectors are trying to get full sets. Some of the original bobble head dolls from the first year are being sold for big money.

I Am Such a Wimp When it Comes to Theme Park Rides

My family recently made a trip to Six Flags for a weekend outing, and it is definitely one of my children’s favorite places to go. They love the roller coasters more than anything, and the only problem is that my wife has to take them on most of the rides because I am a total wimp when it comes to theme park rides.

The first thing my son does when he gets to the park is run to the line for the highest and fastest roller coaster, and he always wants me to join him. I am trying to get onto one of the children’s rides, because the thought of being on some of the theme park rides absolutely terrifies me.

I know that they have one ride that soars around in loops and twists and hills at what appears to be an astronomical speed and then stops. Then, it starts back up again in reverse, so the riders get to take in the entire experience, but this time, they are going backwards!

My wife was the one that pointed out to me that I was really a wimp when it came to theme park rides, and she asked me why I didn’t like them. She thought roller coasters were great and really enjoyed riding them with our kids. The only problem for her is that she does not enjoy waiting in line.

I tried one day to sit down and analyze why I had such a problem with certain rides, and I think it is probably because I don’t like the feeling of being at a machine’s mercy. I never went to theme parks as a child very much, either, and the thrill of it was just never there for me the way it is for some people.

My daughter is always giving me a hard time about it, too. She said that she can’t believe that an eight-year old girl is not afraid to ride on the theme park rides, but I am. I guess she thinks that I have a complex about it, but I really don’t. I could care less if anyone thinks that I am a chicken when it comes to such matters; I am a self-professed wimp with theme park rides.

We had a great time at Six Flags that day, and my children want to go back in the very near future. Every time we talk about it, they are constantly trying to get me to go on one of the roller coasters, and I always tell them that it will never happen. They insist that I will have fun, but there is no way that I will ever do it, and nobody will ever make me!

Running Shoes: How to Pick the Best One

Filed under: Sports Games — Tags: — highlyrelevant @ 3:31 pm

Choosing running shoes can be difficult if you don’t know what to look for. Most companies have dozens of options, from the most basic to very high-tech.

Since you only wear them while running you may think it is okay to shop for discount running shoes. In fact, you may find it difficult to convince your spouse that good running shoes are worth the money. First, you need to convince yourself.

Whether you choose Saucony, Asics, New Balance or Nike running shoes, you need the best running shoes, not the cheapest. Each of these brands makes high quality running shoes. If you have brand loyalty that’s fine, as long as the brand you prefer makes the exact shoe that you need. A good fit is more important than a well-known brand.

Do you know your foot type? Do you have fallen arches or high arches? What about your gait? Are you pronate or supinate? Does your foot roll inwards, how much? When you put your foot down does it stay neutral? Or does it stay on the outside? This will make a huge difference when finding the best running shoes.

While running shoes ratings and running shoes reviews can help, when it comes down to it, you need to choose the shoe that is best for you. These reviews can come in quite handy when it’s time to choose the place you are going to buy from.

Now that you know the most important things about finding the best running shoes you can apply your knowledge to walking shoes as well. Many people believe that it is safe to walk in any old pair of shoes. While it is true that running can cause more stress on your body, it is still a good idea to have a good pair of walking shoes.

Looking for running shoes? Holabird Sports offers a wide selection of running shoes for all types, whether its walking, aerobics, basketball or cross training. For free shipping, low prices and great customer service, visit http://www.holabirdsports.com today.

Clearing the Fog of Misinformation in the Treatment of Running Injuries

An hamstring pull is one of the most troublesome and stubborn injuries that runners come across. Running injuries, hamstring problems, ligament problems and Achilles’ heel injuries, are typically notoriously difficult to treat. These occur in places in the body that receive little blood supply, and healing is often slow and irregular. The latest developments in ligament healing medicine though, introduce specific approaches that could revolutionize the treatment of stubborn running injuries.

Of all the new lines of treatment for running injuries discovered in recent years, three stand out as particularly promising. The first one involves helping an injured tendon heal by injecting a patient’s own blood into the tendon. The next, called the Platelet Rich Plasma method is even more promising; it involves processing a patient’s blood to concentrate the most platelets in the smallest volume possible, and then injecting the newly derived platelet rich plasma into the injured area. The third takes a somewhat different approach. This method tries to take advantage of precise muscle movements in helping an injury heal. The muscle movements of interest in this form of healing are called eccentric contractions. This involves attempting to stress a muscle in a direction opposed to the one it tries to naturally contract in.

Orthopedic experts do not exactly agree on which one of these three approaches makes the most sense in the treatment of sports injuries like a tennis elbow, a rotator cuff injury for a swimmer or any other. And in the environment of disagreement and uncertainty that prevails in the method of choice in the treatment of sports injuries, a lot of misinformation and mythology abounds. I learned all of this tending to the running injuries I suffered in my life as a recreational runner. The kind of sports injury my body preferred to keep having was always to the hamstrings. The more I did the rounds at the hospitals, the more I realized that I could probably serve myself better: so difficult is it to find a really grounded doctor who deals with running injuries.

The first thing I realized was that ice packs and anti-inflammatory pills like Ibuprofen and even physician-prescribed injections of cortisone, all assume that the tendon concerned, my hamstrings in my case, are inflamed. They even call it tendinitis or tendon inflammation. Often enough though, as it was with me, the problem with my hamstrings had nothing to do with inflammation at all. My hamstrings were just degenerating with age. And did you ever know that pain in a tendon doesn’t really come about because the tendon is injured? Tendons themselves don’t hurt; the pain comes when the body tries to heal the area, by laying down new blood vessels.

Considering the importance of the presence of blood in a tendon that is trying to heal, some of the new treatment methods that involve the injection of Platelet Rich Plasma makes a lot of sense. The platelets jumpstart the regeneration process in an injured or torn ligament. There are major new studies being undertaken to completely establish once and for all the effect and the benefits to be had from these blood injection methods. A certain amount of vigorous exercise is also a good thing when you’re trying to heal from running injuries that affect tendons. Exercise pumps more blood into the area, and that cannot be a bad thing.

Running Tips for when you Encounter Over-Training

For high school athlete Mark Ericson, his running season went great up until spring this year. His training for the past year was relentless and it seemed like it was paying off. Each day that he ran, he was shaving a hundredth of a second off his time. But not long after, at the beginning of spring track, everything seemed to go off-track. Each time he ran the thousand-meter course, he seemed to add about 5 seconds to his time. He seemed to be getting slower with each training round. His coach began to look deeper into the problem; the boy didn’t need any running tips - he was an expert himself. And yet, here he was getting slower by the day, irritable, his muscles numb all the time. His coach had read about something like this - it was called overtraining. It is the thing that every athlete dreads. Is there are a limit to how much you can train your body - is there a limit to how much you can push yourself?

Overtraining is something you’ll rarely read about in any list of running tips you come by. If it is rare, it is only because the kind of commitment it takes to reach a state of overtraining is something most people find to be too much. It is actually a real physical ailment. If you overstress your body for too long, it fights back. It fights back with aches and pains, tiredness and psychological detachment. As rare as the condition is, people are beginning to take notice of this, and it’s becoming somewhat a fashionable ailment to suffer from. These days, people read about overtraining in a section on running tips in the magazine, and the moment they have a problem with their performance, they begin to complain of overtraining.

This isn’t the way it’s supposed to go. To begin with, overtraining is terribly rare - even for athletes. If you are running maybe 25 miles a week and you feel that you have a problem, you probably need to look into other causes. The body is perfectly capable of handling 25 miles a week. When you try to double that or maybe triple that, and then feel dead inside doing 80 miles a week, that’s when you might need to consider the possibility that you could be overtraining.

There is an important reason why you can’t just go about jumping to the conclusion every so often that you could have a case of overtraining on your hands. When you are in this position, there is really no way out of it other than to quit training for months. What athlete would want to do that - it would probably take him out of running forever. So how really do you know that yours is a case of genuine overtraining? As a matter of fact, overtraining is a poorly understood condition. It isn’t just a slowness or sense of exhaustion that signals this. The first thing you notice is that your heart rate is a lot faster than it should be when you’re resting normallly, or with moderate levels of work. And athletes also find that they feel weaker, and they can’t really walk with the kind of muscle-coordinated confidence they always had. The best running tips always suggest that you need to push yourself as an athlete as far as your body will go - without going too far. It’s when an athlete goes over the line without realizing it, that this happens. You’re supposed to train just a bit past your real abilities to qualify as having pushed yourself. When you train more than just a touch above your ability though, your body throws in the towel.

Olympic coaches are exquisitely aware of overtraining and know exactly how to hit the mark. Not long ago, the best of athletic wisdom out there felt that it was the sheer hours of training you put into your sport that helped you improve. Now coaches understand that there is a point beyond which a lot of training doesn’t really help you that much, and only puts you in danger of overtraining. When it occurs, the signs are there for all to see - when an athlete seems to gain very little for crazy hours of training he puts in, that’s a sign. An athlete who isn’t pumping his fist and beaming with self-confidence after a training session is another sign. If an athlete is just exhausted all the time, it’s time to stop. It’s just that athletes completely give themselves over to the sport and never know when to stop.

Sports medicine specialists would be a great idea when you suspect a problem. Sometimes they’ll give you blood tests to test for certain kinds of chemicals known as Ferritins that appear at very low levels in people who overtrain. With the right kind of supplements, it could help cure the problem. But mostly, the advice will be simple and unpleasant - it’s three months off the sport. It will be for the athlete’s own good, and it always works.

What to Look For in new Running Shoes?

Filed under: Soccer — Tags: — highlyrelevant @ 12:32 am

There are a lot of factors that go into choosing running shoes. You not only have to find a pair that are comfortable, but you need a pair that are built to do what you need, whether it’s speed, distance running, indoor, track or trail running.

Just because you have found discount running shoes in your size, doesn’t mean that’s the best idea. When it comes to exercise equipment, shopping only during running shoes sales can do more harm than good. You may feel that the right shoes are too much and not worth the money.

Some people believe that when you buy Saucony, Asics, New Balance or Nike running shoes that you are just paying for the logo. While this train of thought may be understandable it’s not correct. These shoe brands are well known because they are on the cutting edge of new technology. They annually spend large amounts of money researching the best features for your feet.

One of the most important things to do is to look at how you stand and walk: the way your foot lands, do you put your heel down first, does your foot stay neutral or roll inward? Depending on whether your foot turns inwards or outwards will decide whether the best running shoes for you is neutral, stability or motion control. The way you walk is called your gait and will tell you how your foot absorbs shock. Most people don’t know much about their own feet. They don’t understand the difference between the way the foot lands when they are walking and running. They couldn’t tell you if their arches are high or low. These things are all vital when it comes to getting the best running shoes. You need to understand whether you are pronate, neutral, or supinate, once you know this, you can narrow your shoe choices down to neutral, stability or motion control.

Next, read running shoes ratings and running shoes reviews to learn what other people are saying. Of course you can’t base a decision on this alone, but reading the thoughts of real people can really help you narrow down your search.

Now that you know the most important things about finding the best running shoes you can apply your knowledge to walking shoes as well. Many people believe that it is safe to walk in any old pair of shoes. While it is true that running can cause more stress on your body, it is still a good idea to have a good pair of walking shoes.

How Many Bicep Workouts Per Week

Hit the gym to blast through your bicep workout only once each week. If you insist on training your arms more frequently than this you’re going to have a really hard time packing on any muscle mass in your arms. While you can get away with it for awhile, but eventually you’re going to hit a wall and actually start losing size and strength in your arms. Instead of taking the volume approach to your biceps workouts, focus on making each workout as effective as possible - this is the key to forcing your muscle to grow. Get in to the gym, get through your workout then get out of the gym as quickly as possible so that you can focus on feeding your body the nutrients that it needs to pack on muscle mass.

Workout Exercise Program

It’s possible that you tend to avoid exercise because you don’t have the time to take an hour or two out of your day for it. Gyms and health clubs today are trying to tap into a large and neglected market to help spread their business. They call their new service their “express programs”, and they position themselves squarely at saving you your valuable time. The moment you walk in the gym, they aim to take over the 15 minutes you let them have, and to give you a precisely tailored exercise regime that will whip into shape in as little time as that.

The rush workout exercise program was mostly invented by the Curves International chain of women’s health clubs. It involved a 30 minute rush program; you came in and fled from one exercise device to the next in record time, to give yourself a well-rounded workout in no time at all. Pretty soon everyone else caught on; the national fitness chains 24 Hour Fitness, Xpress Zone, and Town Sports International, a regional chain, whipped up the express 22 minute workout exercise regimes, and pretty much everyone else followed suit. The idea has been so successful that even the traditionally slow wellness concepts of yoga and spinning have caught on with 30 minute sessions. If they feel that they can’t give you your money’s worth in an all-around program in the time, they often offer you short sessions that focus on certain parts of the body that you need to train, your tummy, your legs and so on.

The rush workout idea is predictably popular; not least because people pay to exercise, and would rather spend as little time in the gym as humanly possible. Quickie workout exercise sessions aren’t just for the hyper busy executive; they are also for people who just can’t stand the idea of exercising, and would at least come in for a little something if they were promised that it would not last long. It can also be a great idea for people who have never exercised, and would like to start off slowly.

If this seems like an idea of its times, would it surprise you to know that the express workout exercise idea was born way back in the leisurely 90s? Gyms would advertise programs that promised to help you hop from one machine to another, all in record time. The idea wasn’t popular back then. Today, it is an idea whose time has come. The idea makes sense, when seen in light of the recommendation of the Surgeon General that people need at least a 30 minute workout each day. More would be better, but this would be the absolute minimum required for a reasonable level of health.

Gym owners fully expect that the express workout exercise session is only going to be called that for a few more years; they see that the hour-long exercise session is on its way out. Pretty soon, the 20 minute or 30 minute exercise session is all there will be.

Quail Hunting

Practice now if you hunted quail in November, because in the summer you know how to do it

That’s just the way it seems to be with everything. You do something new, even if you’ve studied and practiced, you do something you knew nothing about until you do it. That’s the way it is with quail hunting. All those mistakes you made, your clumsiness with your gear, your shotgun not responding to your quick movements, the dog flushing them out before you’re even ready (hey, you’re hunting, you should always be ready). Now it’s summer and you’re planning to go quail hunting next season.

While you’re planning it, get over to the skeet range and practice. Quail, as you know, are ground dwellers. They leap. They’re quiet. They only leave impressions in the grass where they sat. You might see their tracks, which means you’re in the right area. You wont be tracking them. That’s partly the job of a good hunting dog.

When you got yours on the quail hunting trip to Texas, the quail came down from the sky in a flock. It was easy pickings then. The dog didn’t have to do much work. You took down a couple with just a single shot. It’s best when they come in a flock, isn’t it?

Not sure if you’ll be able to make it to Texas for the next quail hunting season? The trip was much longer than you thought, but Texas is by far the state with the largest quail population in the United States. They’ve got the bobwhite and the blue quail there (check out they pheasants and prairie chicken at the same time). Every year the population just increases. You went there at the end of October, but you can quail hunt until February. You do have to pay for the permit and a game bird stamp, and the two are a bit high, what with the economy the way it is now-a-days. That’s why you will want to practice your hunting skills now, so that permit costs turns out to be worth your while.

You don’t have to go to Texas for quail if you live in the heartlands. In Oklahoma bobwhites are increasing. The licenses is a forth that of Texas, its legacy permit a couple of dollars less than Texas’ game bird stamp. You’re just in the right place if you’re close to Black Kettle or Packsaddle. Kansas resident are in a quail state too, with bobwhites and blue quail. If the weather is good between November and January, expect to find them around Pratt Sandhills and Glen Elder. The license costs a quarter less than in Texas. You’re in the right place if you’re in Missouri, because they’ve got bobwhites at Whetstone Creek near Columbia and by the Lamine River near Otterville. The forecast have been good for the season, November through January, and the annual license is a quarter the amount for Texas. Nebraska also boast of bobwhites. For a license a third that of Texas’ they got quail over at Osage near Tecumseh and Near Malcomb at Branched Oak Lake.

The south has its quail states too: Florida. Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama and Kentucky. All of them have bobwhites with seasons generally between November to February, with stable or increasing population.

Even in the southwest you can go quail hunting, there in Arizona, New Mexico, and California. They’ve got blues and bobwhites, good forecasts for populations, but licenses cost nearly as much as one for Texas.

No, you don’t need to go to Texas for the thrill of quail hunting, but if you’re going to get anything, no matter what state, practice, when you finally know how to do it.

Exercise Tips

My kind of exercise is all about bicycling. My cycling partner and I do our usual 10 mile circuit every weeked over picturesque roads not far from her home. The return leg is where it gets to be really fun. The last couple of miles turns out to be real race to the finish. I usually like to pedal as fast to the finish line as possible and then come to a spectacular screeching stop. My friend though likes to take the exercise reading he does really seriously. And one of the most important exhortation that exercise manuals give you tends to be about the cooldown rule. Physiology books and fitness manuals will devote entire chapters to it, and computerized home gym equipment will actually include cooldown phaces in their programming. To devotees of this exercise philosophy, at the end of any serious run of exercise, you can’t just go and sit down at the end; you need to allow the body to wind down with several minutes of gentler exercise.

Which is kind of funny, considering that there is no real scientific thinking that backs it up. Cooling down is just what the gut instinct says is right. There is no scientific research that has gone into it. No one even knows what exactly a cooldown is supposed to consist of. Some people say that you just need to continue doing the same thing you were doing, only more slowly. If you are running, you need to jog, and then you need to walk before you stop. Some fitness magazines have exercise tips that recommend that you are to always include a stretching session in your cooldown.

If pressed, exercise experts don’t really know what it is that a cooldown is supposed to achieve. Some say that it does away with soreness in the limbs. Some say that it makes it easier on the heart. There’s really nothing to back any of it up with. The real fitness researchers that actually exist can only agree on one single benefit that a cooldown will bring you. When the body is hard at work during exercise, the blood vessels leading to the legs expand to send more blood to the extremities. With your heart primed to send all that blood down to the far reaches, if you suddenly stop, it could cause blood to collect around your legs, and it could make you feel faint. And the stronger and better trained you are, the worse this problem affects you. Anyone who is well-trained has a heart that is so capable, it only needs to beat this low rates to keep up. If you are physiologically that well-trained, your heart will be able to slow down really quickly to its normal pace; that will only cause blood to stagnate in your legs even more.

But this seems really like scraping the barrel for something to show for the theory. What you really want to know is, does it matter at all to your average athlete who exercises no more than a certain amount each week? But no one just stands there when they are done; they move around, get a shower walk to the car and so on. It doesn’t matter that it actually has to be more of the same kind of exercise. Where exactly do these exaggerated exercise tips originate from?

Popular exercise tips have a certain theory they promote religiously. It is that heavy exercise causes the muscles to produce lactic acid; the muscles become sore when there is too much of it and not enough time to clear it out, and tihis state brings on fatigue and muscle pain, goes the theory. In truth though, lactic acid has nothing to do with soreness. To cyclists like me, lactic acid is actually good; it is converted into glycogen when you don’t cool down, and glycogen is a great muscle fuel. When you do cool down, the lactic acid is dissipated and wasted. So there you go; another great set of exercise tips laid to rest.

Bicycle Helmets

The kind of concern that the environmentally conscientious feel for the state of the planet today can be so persistent and pressing to them that they set very high standards of environmental responsibility to hold themselves to. If they used to drive a large car before, now they have to trade it in for a hatchback; if it was a hatchback they used to drive they would raise the standard to meet and settle for no sacrifice smaller than a bicycle. Have you seen how bicycles are everywhere these days? It’s the environment thing. While pedestrians may not be allowed on the street and cars aren’t allowed on sidewalks, bicycles are amphibious that way - they can thrive in either environment. Pedestrians and car owners aren’t that used to these new creatures on their turf yet - the bicycles; at least not in such numbers. When you are on a bicycle, and the people around you don’t really wish to acknowledge your presence, it can turn out to be less than safe. And that’s where bicycle helmets come in.

ikers don’t often realize how vulnerable there are. It’s easy to say to yourself that here you are on a low-speed vehicle - how bad could it be if you were to fall off? These things can be deceptive in how harmless they seem. No matter where you ride, the busy streets of a city, or the dirt tracks in the woods next to your city, bicycle helmets are more important than you could ever imagine. Consider this statistic - in people using bicycle helmets, instances of head injuries are down 90%; facial injuries are down 70%, according to the Cochrane Database System Review. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, nine out of ten of all bicyclists who die in accidents have no helmet on. Your head is a delicate object, no matter how hard it seems. People make the mistake of thinking that it must take a terrible knock to cause injury. The brain isn’t like an arm or leg though - it isn’t easy to understand the kind of damage an injury could cause. It’s full of tiny circuits; the smallest kind of damage could mean something really serious.

Several states in the country have laws that make it illegal for anyone younger than 18 to ride a bicycle without a helmet. Some counties in the country, have even stricter laws and require everyone, adult and child, to wear a helmet. This isn’t really a good idea. If anything, adults are more at risk of injury in the event of a knock of some kind. As we grow older, past 30 for instance, our brains become somehow smaller. That puts more room in our skulls, room in which the brain can move and knock itself against the insides of the skull when there is a shock. And right there is your reason to see why brain damage is a possibility riding a bicycle and falling off one, over 30. If you are worried about one more thing to spend on, here’s a bit of encouraging news - almost any low-priced helmet you could get at a standard retailer, does the job just as well as a fancier product. And bicycle helmets come in plenty of sizes, colors and styles to suit everyone too.

Before you put down your $10 for helmet though, make sure that it’s well built, and meets federal standards. Look for the certifying sticker from the Consumer Product Safety Commission to see that it does. Make sure that your helmet fits you properly and doesn’t have sharp edges that could hurt you in the fall. It would be good idea to get one with reflective stickers on it, to make sure you are visible in the dark; and when you fall on your noggin once, make sure you discard the helmet for a new one. These are made of a kind of polystyrene. They are supposed to compress and absorb the blow when you fall. If they compress once, they won’t compress as well the next time. Helmets don’t work more than once.

Enhance The Taste Of Your Fish With Your Own Fishing Lures

A lure tempts and entices, and a fishing lure tempts and entices a fish. This definition might well apply to live bait, but we normally do not mean something alive when we talk about fishing lures. We mean something that acts as if it were alive, that appears alive, that creates, for the fish, an illusion. You might think that since fish have tiny brains, they is easily fooled into thinking a lure is a living, edible thing, but fish are one of the oldest creatures on earth, with a history that has sharpened their instincts, their eyes, their ability to detect the real from the false when it comes to food. They have an unconscious memory of the way their prey moves through the water, the may it moves its appendages, the way it wiggles and squirms, its normal form and face, its oils, its smell. To fool a fish with a lure is not as easy as you might think, and yet, with the right combination of elements, the bigger brain of man can create a lure that will not only fool that fish, but spark its appetite.

Many lures for specific kinds of fish can be found in the marketplace, and the most successful have been scientifically designed and tested for optimum results. Most fisherman have cases of such lures, each having been purchased at a modest price. Looking at such a collection, you immediately recognize that what attracts a fish is colorful, shaggy, winged, eyed. If you’re the inventive type, you might even think you have intelligence enough to make a lure yourself. What do you need to know, after all?

You need to know that not all fish eat the same things, that each fish has its own favorite foods. If you’re going to make a lure, make it for a specific fish. Study the fish, it’s foods, the environment of its foods, and then study the prey itself. Fishing lures are made to look and behave as the prey does. Try to be exact; don’t add another color that isn’t part of the prey just because it fits with the color scheme. A fish does not eat something out of an aesthetic appreciation. It goes for it because its color matches the color of all the other similar prey it has eaten. Something unusual alerts the fish that this is not what it is seeking.

Once you know the different preys, their appearances and behaviors, you can make your own lures with material you can easily obtain from sports stores or even in your odds and ends drawer. You can even make your lures out of such common material as corks, buttons, odorless paints, plastic beads, rubber shags, propellers, and, of course, fishing hooks.

Many fishermen avoid commercial fishing lures altogether. They look at fishing as an intricate art calling for their own creativeness and intelligence, for their own innate hunting skills which, like the fish, has a deep history of fishing, perhaps as old as a 100,000 years.

One thing is certain when using fishing lures you’ve created yourself: you’ll feel the maximum joy possible when you get that first bite on a lure you’ve crafted yourself. Somehow, you wont be able to say how, that fish will taste just a little better than all the others you’ve caught. Man over nature, with your own lure, it a seasoning like no other, aged a 100,000 years in the heart of man.

About Basketball

Basketball is a game played by a team of ten, five on each side. It is mostly played indoors and the brain behind it is Dr. James Naismith who came up with it in 1891. It was supposed to be a solution for athletes who could not practice outside during winter. He was its first coach and he did sports physiology to be able to handle it better. It runs by a set of rules, which keep changing according to the demands of the game. It is a very fast game that requires agility to be able to score. It is among America’s most popular sports and commands a large following. It is governed by the National Basketball Association (NBA) body.

The facts about basketball state that the court must be 28M long and 15M wide. This applies for international games. For the NBA leagues, the court is normally 29m long and 15m wide. The goal post is 10 foot high and to score; one passes the ball through it. To play the game, the teams have to be organized in two opposing teams of five people each. Scores are the main objective and the opposing team has to place the ball in the opponent’s basket. It is also accompanied by dribbling which is followed by shooting the ball. Through dribbling, the player is able to move to a spot where he can make an attempt to score.

Another key fact about basketball is passing of the ball. As he dribbles, the player passes the ball among his teams mate to lessen the distance. To ensure that the play is fair, a set of rules have to be observed. Players are penalized for fouls and violations. Fouls refer to rough play that results into physical contact with another player. Violations refer to the fouls a player commits against another who was attempting to score. Some of the penalties include free throws. Internationally, basketball is played in 10-minute quarters. This however changes in the NBA leagues to 12 minutes. The players are positioned in the court according to their role. There is a point guard, a power forward, a shooting guard, a center, and a small forward.

There are some facts about basketball that are quite interesting. One of them is about the first ever basketball game to be played which happened on Jan 20, 1892. Nine players took up the challenge on a very small court as compared to today’s standards. Basketball became so popular that many people ended up at the YMCA Training center to learn it. Its popularity spread across Canada and the United States. The first ever inter-college match was between University of Minnesota and Hamline University where the latter stole the show. Basketball was first played by women on March 21, 1893. This team was led by a Senda Berenson and she had to alter some of the rules to suit women players. Another interesting fact about basketball is that its governing body, National Basketball Association (NBA) was formed in 1946. The world known basketball legend is Michael Jordan. He has scored more than 5,987 goals and this record is yet to be broken.
