Proper equipment is a “must” in any boxing program. A capable, qualified coach would not send a boy on the football field without proper shoulder pads or headgear. Yet, I have seen high school boxers use worn-out gloves and a makeshift mat with no canvas cover; and I have known of boys who have not been provided with aluminum cups. This is absolute false economy, and should not be tolerated.
Proper mouthpieces, well-padded headgears, and hand-wraps should be available for all contestants in a boxing program. It is advisable to have high-topped boxing shoes, but where economy is a factor, light-weight basketball shoes will suffice.
All equipment should be properly maintained, both for the safety of the boy and for reasons of economy.
In comparison with most other sports, boxing is inexpensive to conduct, and can be very profitable financially. After the initial outlay for the ring, punching bag, and gloves, additional purchases are minor in nature. Upkeep is incidental. Many high schools in the states of Louisiana, Washington, Virginia, and Wisconsin are now showing a larger profit from boxing than from any other sport. In numerous colleges boxing receipts are second only to those derived from football. We do not wish to convey the impression that we suggest boxing only because of the profit motive. But we do wish to show that the sport needn’t be conducted at a financial loss to the school.

Modern archery tackle is far superior to that used by the Indians and contests between Indians and white men leave no doubt as to the superiority of the modern weapon. The Indian depended on his skill in stalking to secure game, and his kills were made at short distances. Indians of the western plains killed buffalo with the bow and arrow by riding their ponies alongside a fleeing buffalo and discharging their arrows at short range.

Roller skating, one of America’s primary mass participant sports, has traveled a long and sometimes hard road since the day two centuries ago when an anonymous Dutchman first attempted to transfer skating from ice to ground. My view on adventure sports:
I am not very brave. I don’t like heights, fast speeds or defying gravity. I much prefer my feet to be planted firmly on the ground. The only vaguely exciting activity I have ever done is downhill skiing, which I loved. Adventure sports are not really for me but I wish I could get over my inhibitions and go for it. I am an armchair sportswoman; content to watch other people take crazy risks.

In 1891, Dr. James A. Naismith of Springfield College, Springfield, Massachusetts, devised a game to occupy the students in physical education classes during the winter months. He nailed a peach basket to the side of the balcony at each end of the gymnasium into which a ball was to be tossed. A janitor sat on a ladder to retrieve the ball from the basket after a player had made a goal. From this primitive beginning came the game now played by thousands of people throughout the world. In the United States basketball attracts more spectators than any other sport. Moreover, more athletes participate in the game of baskeball than in any other sport. Basket rings attached to a garage, tree or clothespole are not an uncommon sight.
In the early days of basketball the two forwards did most of the scoring. The guards very seldom took a shot, and the center was used mainly to get the tap on center jumps after each field goal. In 1937 when the center jump was abolished by the high school, college and professional associations, the nature of the game changed entirely.
The use of the fast break and the development of one-hand shots, particularly the jump shot, have made basketball a game requiring a degree of skill unknown in its early days. In a single game today individual players often score as many points as an entire team did before the center jump was abolished.

Now that women have taken up the sport however, bowling balls come in almost every hue; and the weights range from ten pounds to sixteen, though never more than sixteen. Black models retail for about $25; other colors and mottled balls are slightly more than that.
Bowling balls are made of hard rubber. The lighter weight balls contain a cork center, and cost about the same as the sixteen pounders.
