Six Fitness Tips to Staying Young

Filed under: Exercise Fitness, Sports Medicine — Author @ 7:04 am
  1. Drink plenty of water. Studies show that drinking sufficient amounts of water daily (about 60-80 oz) will keep your skin hydrated and looking youthful. Some studies also show that being well-hydrated increases your metabolism, so you’ll burn calories better. If you tend toward constant snacking or binge-eating, substitute water for your snacks, when possible. Also drink a large glass of water about 20 minutes before a meal and you will feel more “full” and eat less. (Our bodies often mistake feelings of “hunger” that are really feelings of “thirst.”
  2. Eat a well-balanced diet. A diet filled with fruits and veggies, lean protein and whole grains provides your body with disease fighting nutrients. High-fiber foods will aid in digestion and will help move some fats through your system more efficiently. …

Weight Loss with Exercise

Filed under: Exercise Fitness, Sports, Sports Medicine — Author @ 6:58 am

Lets face it – our country is filled with overweight guys who want to be thin. We try all kinds of things: from weight loss diets to lose weight exercise, but nothing seems to work for many of us. The fact is that we just can’t seem to keep the weight off. Even if we use the best exercises to lose weight, we tend to not be able to stick with them. Sometimes it starts off with an extra treat on the weekends. Some times a trip out to the local bar with the boys, and the alcohol pours the calories right on the belt line! Other times, our resolve suddenly breaks down. Whatever the reasons, our diet plans and our lose weight exercises tend to lose steam eventually.

The only way to make you lose weight through exercise really stick is to be fanatically dedicated to losing weight. This means that you must live every day as if weight loss were your most important priority. (Some day, the docs may sit you down in a small room and explain to you that because of hypertension, too much fat around the middle, or too many years of sedentary living, it IS the most important thing in your life.) You have to be in the gym at least three times a week and doing both cardiovascular and weightlifting exercises. Eliminate junk food from your life. Stick to a healthier diet while keeping your body moving.. Your lose weight exercise plan must be complemented by a good, healthy diet.

Avoid fad diets altogether. Maybe some of them work, maybe some of them don’t, but there is one thing that we all know: a good, sane, healthy diet works for everyone. All you have to do on top of your lose weight exercise is to eat lots of vegetables, a fair number of grains, and only healthy fats. You don’t have to cut out fat entirely – if you use olive oil and other vegetable oils, you should be just fine. Read food labels and watch your portion size. Make sure your food is low in the “bad” fats and cholesterol, and most importantly: don’t try to get all your vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients out of a vitamin bottle! Perhaps you won’t lose weight quite as quickly as on the Atkins diet, but you (and your liver) will be much healthier…

Don’t be a “Gym Profit” this year

Filed under: Amateur Sports, Exercise Fitness, Sports — Author @ 6:43 am

Coach Hardwood says:

When you’re making your plans for 2008, and that includes a new gym membership, remember that those businesses make their money because they know that all new members stay an average of two months on their contract. Never return to use the facilities, never use up any of the gym’s resources. TWO bloody months! And you could be into a 12 month (or longer) contract… they charge you every month (or they already have your cash!) whether you show up or not!

This year, if you join the gym, CARRY THROUGH with your commitment. you paid for it with your cash now pay for it by putting your butt through the door! Don’t be a gym profit this year, but instead, plan to be one of the ones that goes 5-6 days/week, and eats up the profits they made of the other guy (you know… the one with the ever-expanding waist line) who showed up twice and never returned.

for 2008, it’s all about you getting your money’s worth, and getting your life on track and your flab on the run.

Muscle Dysmorphia and the 98 Pound Hercules

Filed under: Amateur Sports, Exercise Fitness, Sports, Sports Medicine — Author @ 5:22 pm

Men with muscle dysmorphia have a distorted body image, seeing themselves as having tiny muscles even if they are heavily muscled. This concern can lead to an obsession with gaining muscle and definition at any cost, including over-training and using potentially dangerous supplements such as anabolic steroids.

In a recent issue of the British Journal of Sports Medicine, lead author Precilla Y. L. Choi of Loughborough University in the UK and colleagues evaluated questionnaires that measured self-esteem and body image, among other attributes of mental health, for 24 male bodybuilders diagnosed with muscle dysmorphia. Their responses were compared with those from another group of bodybuilders without the disorder.

According to the report, men with muscular dysmorphia reported greater dissatisfaction with their overall appearance, muscle tone and weight. While they saw themselves as less attractive than their peers without the disorder, their appearance was also more important to them.

The findings also suggest that men with the disorder may view themselves to be less healthy than their gym-going peers, but this finding was not statistically significant, the authors note….

Are you fixated on having the Perfect Body?

Filed under: Exercise Fitness, News and Views, Society and Sports, Weightlifting — Author @ 5:15 pm

I’m often asked how much exercise a person needs to keep fit. Usually the question is not asked by the lazy, but by people who find they have little time for long workouts. In the hectic pace at which most of us live time a precious commodity.

Well, the answer is not as easy as it may seem. While any exercise is better than none, too much can be detrimental.

Usually I answer the question by using the tale of the race between the tortoise and the hare. The fastest doesn’t always get to the finish line first.

This seems to be borne out by a study on exercise carried out in the Netherlands. It found there was value even in exercise during TV commercials.

In fact it found these two minute exercise breaks during commercials were more effective than brief, high-intensity health club workouts based on the ”no pain, no gain” mantra in weight loss.

One of the best things about boating is the fact that there are many boats designed for many different activities. For the majority of boaters, a general purpose craft that serves as a fish, ski,and picnic boat is ideal.

To help you narrow down your search, ask yourself how you plan to use the boat. Fishing, cruising, water skiing, water sports, racing, or a bit of everything is what you should be wondering. There is a boat out there for you, all you have to do is find it.

Finding the right size Finding the right size of boat depends on how many people you’ll have
boating with you and where you plan to go. All new boats have an “NMMA capacity
plate” that will you how many people you can safely have on the boat at a time. If you plan to use a trailer, you shouldn’t get a boat bigger than 26 feet in length. For the rest of the Story
