Term Life Insurance

Filed under: Amateur Sports, Articles about Sports, Terrell Owens — Author @ 1:44 pm

Term life insurance is generally the least expensive and least complicated type of life insurance. It provides insurance protection for a specified period of time, such as 10, 20 or 30 years.1 If you die within the term period and the policy is in force, a death benefit is paid to your beneficiary. If you are still living at the end of the term, protection ceases unless your term life insurance policy is renewed. There is no “accumulation” element, or cash value with term life insurance.

Nutrition - Fit for an Athlete

Filed under: Athletes — Author @ 6:45 am

For an athlete achieving peak performance is paramount particularly in the competitive world of athletics. Athletes perform at their very best when they undergo proper training and eat a balanced and nutritious diet. Whether you are a keen sports person or an athlete competing at the highest level, good fitness is necessary to maintain strength, fight infections and injuries and provide energy. Therefore let us examine the nutritional elements that make up an athlete’s diet alongside other tips worth considering.

An athlete’s diet is largely made up of carbohydrates known as complex and simple carbohydrates. Complex carbohydrates are found in foods such as cereals, pasta and potatoes and simple carbohydrates are in foods namely sugar, honey and fruit.

Complex carbohydrates are broken down by the body during digestion and turned into glucose which is then stored in the body as glycogen. During exercise the glycogen is converted back to glucose and used for the energy required to sustain prolonged and strenuous bouts of activity. It is important that an athlete’s energy levels are kept up during this time as a lack of it may well lead to fatigue and a weakened mental attitude, vital if he or she is to win and perform at their best.

Glycogen is a form of glucose. The body cannot store much glycogen although athletes need a lot of it. Therefore in order to keep the ‘glycogen tank’ full, try to eat carbohydrates as much as you can and drink plenty of water as glycogen is stored better when the body is well hydrated.

Try to avoid white sugar and honey as this increases the pain of injuries. Should an injury occur, get a fresh pineapple and eat as much of it as you can as it contains an enzyme called Bromelain, which helps the healing process by breaking down the injured tissue. Taking vitamin B6 is also good as it is a natural diuretic and helps carry damaged tissue out of the system.

A good diet which contains a variety of foods will ensure that an athlete gets sufficient vitamins and minerals. Vitamins such as Thiamin B1, Riboflavin B2 Niacin and Folacin maintain a healthy body and are found in foods such as whole grains, liver, lean meats, milk and green leafy vegetables. Calcium is also good for bone structure and strength and a lack of it can lead to osteoporosis later in life. A excellent supply of Calcium can be found in foods such as eggs, cheese and milk.

Iron serves an important part in the body as it carries oxygen to the red blood cells and removes carbon dioxide. Many growing athletes, women and vegetarians are prone to having an iron deficiency due to poor iron intake, low absorption or loss of iron in sweat. A diet sufficient in fruits, vegetables, cereals and red meat will help rectify any shortage.

The function of protein in the diet also provides a vital role. Protein is used for building and repairing muscle, bone, skin, hair and other tissues. It is essential in the diet as the body doesn’t store protein, the best sources coming from eggs, milk, meat and fish. In general athletes who train hard tend to need more protein than the average individual, and the amounts they need depend on the duration, intensity and frequency of the exercise. Athletes whose diet is low in protein may experience fatigue and poor performance.

Foods that contain fats provide fuel for the body and the amount of fat used depends on the athletes physical fitness and the event that he or she is competing in. Trained athletes tend to use up more fat than an untrained athlete. A good amount of body fat is needed and care must be taken when eating foods with a high fat content as it can lead to weight gain. Select lean cuts of meats and low fat dairy products along with ‘healthy’ fats and oils such as Canola and Olive oils.

Water is crucial in the life of an athlete and drinking 8-10 glasses of water throughout the day will ensure that you are replacing fluids loss during exercise. Dehydration can cause fatigue and muscle cramps. Drinking chilled liquids throughout the event is advisable as they lower body temperature.
Other tips to note are:-
Always eat breakfast as this will help kick start your day and your metabolism.
Do not eat any foods that you are not familiar with. An athlete doesn’t need any ’suprises’ on the big day. Experiment after the event and not before.
Any food eaten should be well digested before the exercise or event begins. The body must feel as light as possible. Leave 3.5 hours after eating a high carbohydrate meal and 2-3 hours after eating a big meal.

So for anyone who enjoys sports competing is only half the fun. Keeping your body in peak condition will not only benefit you in years to come but will ensure that you excel and win at your chosen sport. After all as the saying goes ‘You are what you eat’ a phrase that rings notably true in the world of athletics.

Drake is making history in Iowa

Filed under: Amateur Sports, Athletes, Basketball, Coaches — Author @ 10:55 am

The Iowa travel guide lists several sports events as hot spots in the state. Of course they include the University of Iowa Hawks and the Iowa State Cyclones at the top of the list. Surprisingly the pro and semi pro teams fall under those two college teams in attendance rankings. Then they list the lower class teams such as UNI and Drake, although most of the state’s attention seems to be focused on the Drake basketball team this season. This team offers no scholarships but managed to get ranked in the top twenty in the nation. They are expected to get into the sweet sixteen this year with a good shot at the final four. No one wants to jinx their chances by picking them as the number one winner, but there have been whispers on the subject. The team was coached by Tom Davis until he retired last season. The new coach is none other than coach Davis’ son Keno. The players claim that they could barely tell the coach had changed, but apparently Keno has what it takes to make the chemistry work for the players. They will tell you that no one of them is a standout but together they are a force to be reckoned with.

Southeast Iowa fights proposed rule change

Filed under: Amateur Sports, Athletes, Sports Games — Author @ 10:53 am

The high school aesthetic association is thinking about holding some regional tournaments to increase tourism in the areas. The Southeast Iowa Tourism board is afraid that the effect will actually be to draw tourism dollars away from that part of the state. They claim that because they don’t have many large cities that they won’t get their fare share of the contests, thus causing people from that part of the state to take their dollars to other parts of the state with out a reciprocal number of tourist dollars coming there. The claim is that the Des Moines area would be the largest benefactor and they already get more money from in state tourists than any other area. The IHSAA is working on a plan to cover that irregularity, possibly holding several of the Des Moines area teams events in places like Mt Pleasant or Burlington. That suggestion is raising the ire of the Polk County residents as they don’t think they should have to travel for three hours to see their teams play. What they don’t realize is that all teams in the state that make it to the state championships take the drive to Des Moines to see their respective teams play.

Central Iowa tourism increases as tournaments hit the area

Filed under: Amateur Sports, Athletes, Fishing — Author @ 11:44 am

The state high school tournaments are always held in the central Iowa tourism region as this is where the bulk of Iowa attractions are and is also the center of shopping in the state. Every tournament draws a different type of crowd. The wrestling tournament which just concluded brought an independent crowd, they aren’t the biggest shoppers but they do consume more food dollars per contestant than the other tournaments. Not that the contestants consume that much more it is their parents and fans that cause that increase. The next tournament scheduled to start next week is the girls state basketball tournament. This one causes an increase of clothing sales. With that many teenage girls in town and with prom being not that far off, it’s easy to see why those sales increase. The week after that the boys state basketball tournament comes to town. This crowd does increase the food sales but also seems to increase the sporting goods sales and not just things like team sports equipment. With the fishing season being on the horizon there is an increase in sales in fishing supplies too. Then next summer the soccer tournaments hit. These usually bring younger participants so the game boy related sales skyrocket.

Conditioning.

Appropriate Time Management for Student Athletes

Filed under: Athletes — Author @ 4:37 am

Just as well as for a student athlete, time is very critical. Each day should be productive. Being a student athlete is difficult. Their mind is divided into several goals. Their attention is also separated by other conditions like practice, championship games, curricular activities, examination date, and maintaining a good GPA (General Periodical Average).

Learning time management can help the student athletes to become more efficient. Practices, classes, games must have an allocated time. For most of the student athletes, time commitment must be viewed on different aspects.

Aerobic Shoes for Jogging and Exercise

The importance of proper aerobic shoes is often underrated. People talk about doing the exercises right, planning out a routine, eating properly, hydrating properly, and all manner of other workout tips, but they seldom get to talk about good gym shoes. Of course, if you are taking an aerobics class, then footwear does not matter. You will do all of your aerobic exercise on a padded mat, and wearing shoes will be discouraged, if not outright banned from the room for the sake of preserving the floor. But for many other aerobic exercises (with swimming and a few other excepted) proper aerobic shoes are a must. You just can not protect your feet without them.
