Learn MMA and increase you confidence

Have you been watching the UFC and wondering if learning mma could be something for you? Why not try it out? MMA is one of the fastest growing sports, with clubs that take in beginners all around the world. You probably have an MMA club near you without knowing about it. To learn MMA you need to get a grasp of both standup fighting and ground fighting, and to do this it is best to train boxing and BJJ.

Boxing is one of the main styles of MMA. As they say, all fights start out standing, so this is an important skill to learn if you want to train MMA. This can be done either at a general MMA school or club, or at a specific boxing club.

BJJ is the second style you should train if you want to do MMA. It stands for Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, and is adapted from the Japanese form of Jiu Jitsu, with the difference that it is geared more towards ground fighting and real-life fighting scenarios.

Both these styles are great workouts you will see, as they both require you to use your muscles in a way you are not used to. Both are very taxing on your cardio also, which gets you in shape in no time.

If you think that this sport is to brutal, think again. There are fewer injuries in MMA than in many comparable sports, like Football and Soccer. You also have the benefit of being coached when you join a club, and the instructors will see to that the sparring doesn’t go overboard. Learning skills like MMA can be great fun and also give you the confidence you need in you life to achieve your other goals. After sparring with a 250 lb. gorilla, your boss at work might not seem that intimidating anymore.

 One great way to lose extra body fat is to perform boxing or kickboxing workouts. You can get an incredible cardiovascular workout with a heavy bag, speed bag, and jump rope. Boxing and kickboxing workouts will give you a break from the boredom of most forms of cardio exercise and work muscles you don’t normally train.

Boxing Training: Boxing a Southpaw

It is generally agreed that a southpaw has a distinct advantage in a three-round amateur bout. The reason is simple. A southpaw is accustomed to boxing a right-hander, whereas most right-handers are unfamiliar with southpaw tactics.

Normally southpaws are strictly left-handed punchers, and use their right hand merely to offset the right-hander’s extended left hand. It is for this reason that, when we get a southpaw on our squad, we immediately teach him how to deliver a right jab and a right hook. The right hook is very effective as an offensive punch; also as a counter-punch thrown immediately after a short hop-back. A southpaw who uses his right hand efficiently along with his normally effective left hand is hard to beat.

Proper equipment is a “must” in any boxing program. A capable, qualified coach would not send a boy on the football field without proper shoulder pads or headgear. Yet, I have seen high school boxers use worn-out gloves and a makeshift mat with no canvas cover; and I have known of boys who have not been provided with alumi­num cups. This is absolute false economy, and should not be tolerated.

Proper mouthpieces, well-padded headgears, and hand-wraps should be available for all contestants in a boxing program. It is advisable to have high-topped boxing shoes, but where economy is a factor, light-weight basket­ball shoes will suffice.

All equipment should be properly maintained, both for the safety of the boy and for reasons of economy.

In comparison with most other sports, boxing is inex­pensive to conduct, and can be very profitable financially. After the initial outlay for the ring, punching bag, and gloves, additional purchases are minor in nature. Upkeep is incidental. Many high schools in the states of Louisiana, Washington, Virginia, and Wisconsin are now showing a larger profit from boxing than from any other sport. In numerous colleges boxing receipts are second only to those derived from football. We do not wish to convey the impression that we suggest boxing only because of the profit motive. But we do wish to show that the sport needn’t be conducted at a financial loss to the school.

How Are Your New Year Resolutions Going?

There are many reasons why your resolutions fizzle out well before the year is really underway. You may have “cheated” and therefore assume it’s not worth continuing. You might not have the support system you need to keep going, especially if you’re trying to make a big change. You also might not have really defined what exactly it is you want to do so there is too much leeway in terms on what you can and cannot do to reach your goal.

Here are some tips to help you off to a great start - and carry your new resolutions through until 2008!

Boxing Lesson

Getting your kid into any kind of martial arts lesson, be it boxing lessons, Muay Thai (better known as kickboxing), or one of the less combative fighting arts, will do wonders for his discipline and self esteem. Herbie Hide Continues Cruiserweight Campaign

Former Two Time Heavyweight World Champion Herbie Hide announces today that his comeback as a Cruiserweight is on a fast track as he is scheduled to fight again, less than a month and half from his last fight and one round destruction of Mitch Hicks. This time it will be against Jesse Corona (6-16) on November 4, 2006 at the Mid West Event in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

Gear For Sports

While surfing around the internet last week, I stumbled upon something so fantastic that it immediately got my attention… In fact, I discovered something sooo amazing at first I thought it was “too good to be true” like most things are.

You see, a few months ago, I was actually doing some research on Mr. John Walsh one of the most acknowledged and influential boxing instructor’s of his time. I noticed that most of his work was available and accounted for with the exception of one of his most important pieces of work ‘Boxing Simplified�.

Well, this got me curious and so I started digging a little deeper and I started to send off a few emails asking questions… Unfortunately every, road I seemed to head down was a dead end… until a couple of weeks ago that is…
