The roots of Kung Fu are found in China and date well into the era of pre A.D. The ideology of Kung Fu is grounded in a well-rounded approach to life. This well-rounded approach includes the improvement of all phases of the individual as well as techniques that aid in self-preservation or the use of self-defense in combat. Therefore, Kung Fu blends the mental, emotional, spiritual and physical natures of an individual and understands that there are combatant forces within the person as well as those exerted on a person from outward forces.

The meditation retreat, however, did change my life. Every day, I get up early to meditate in the morning. It is relatively quiet, even in the city where I live. I felt that I did not need a meditation retreat to inspire calm. I create a calm space in my own house. But if you’ve never been on meditation retreats before, you have no way to know what a difference it makes.
With today’s digital cameras, it is much easier and cheaper to teach yourself photography that it has been in years gone by. Without waiting for the film developing processing you can see the results almost immediately, and make any needed adjustments to your personal lesson plan.
In order to teach yourself photography you will need to first determine what type of photography you plan to actively participate in and find instruction materials in that particular field. For example, if you wish to know more about still life photography you will need books on lighting and composition. It will also be helpful to at least look at examples of still life work to get some ideas of things to try.

This sounds like a misnomer, since no knife is used, but your opponent will swear that razor-sharp cutlery was employed, that is, after he recovers! The Knife Hand can be used in two ways, both exÂtremely painful: The downward chop and the side chop. The downward chop is formed by crooking the arm at the elbow and swinging it down obliquely in a swift, slashing, hammer-like motion. Be sure to keep the fingers rigid and close together. Learn to strike fast. The downward Knife Hand is esÂpecially effective on the forearm, the neck, the ribs. It can cause your opponent stinging, excruciating pain. The second variation is the side chop. It is formed by swinging the hand out in a semi-circle from the elbow. The palm should be kept rigid. (See Fig. 6)

When we do classes and seminars on bullying, we feel that it’s important to let people know who bullies really are and what makes them tick. There is so much more to being a bully than simply being mean to someone else.
Who is a bully? First of all, people who bully are often people who have (often secretly) low self-esteem and they turn to bullying to hide their perceived inadequacies. They do this by pointing out inadequacies in other people and trying to get people to fear them.
Bullies often also look for ways to avoid responsibility for their actions or have simply never been taught that there are consequences to certain actions. Often times they are clever enough to avoid being caught by anyone who might force them to face the consequences.

The “holistic approach is nothing new. In the ancient Shaolin Temple, this approach was the cornerstone, indeed, the point, of all teachings. The person as a whole was brought along a carefully-ordered path with patience and broad understanding, to bring out the very essence of their strength of mind, body and spirit. Bellevue Martial Arts Academy continues this time-honored path. All the many and varied physical techniques necessary to make a good Martial Arts system are patiently taught in one-on-one classes, at a rate tailored to each student. And relaxation, Chinese Yoga and breathing techniques are taught at Bellevue Martial Arts School as well as the physical practices so important to make a good practitioner.
There is the camping ground that offers you electricity and running water, as well as a main office in case of an emergency. These areas have life guards and you are sure to meet many different kinds of people and personalities. These places have rules that need to be followed, and also cost about $12.00 a day to be able to camp there. If we wish to carry a heavy load somewhere, we use certain required tools or machines to economize our energy and time. For instance, if we are putting a large stone on a truck, by leaning a plane surface against the truck and making the stone roll or slide along it we can easily do the work, economizing our energy and, in the end, our time. This is taking advantage of both the law of resolution of forces and the law of friction, and if, in addition, we use a lever, we can do the work even more easily. This is taking advantage of the law of moment. We can make the stone roll or turn over to the right or left at will by taking advantage of dynamics. But how about the human body? A human body has a nervous system, so it can perceive your intention and make motions at its own will.
In competitive sports such as judo, wrestling, and boxing, the opponent does not move as you want. On the contrary, he will move in a direction inconvenient to your attack and defense. Hence it is difficult for you to throw or put him down, though you want to do so. Let us take an example. Seeing your opponent advance in a larger step than usual and about to rest his weight on the forward foot, you try to make him fall by sweeping his foot with your foot. But you will never succeed in felling him because his weight has already been put on the foot. Again, if you try to throw him by holding his waist with your arms, he will suddenly lower his waist.

Move into the same position as for the Leg Wheel (Lesson Sixteen), but when you get in with your right leg outstretched pull him tightly against your right side with both hands, so that his balance is broken to his left side directly. Sway your own weight completely over your left leg. This will bring him off the ground balanced over your right hip. Throw by turning to your left.
Points to watch are: The toes of your outstretched right leg do not touch the ground. Your weight must be entirely over your left leg when throwing.
Finish the Lesson with practice at your Pet Throw.
The opponent lies on his back, with his knees raised, and his feet on the ground. Kneel astride his thighs, outside, and tuck your feet under his knees and on to his calves, so as to hold his legs. Get one of his arms above his head, and then fold your arms under his neck, so as to trap this one arm tight against the side of his head. Lie all your weight on his body. If he struggles, spread his legs.
Escape is practically impossible, but equally it is a difficult hold to apply, as opportunities do not often occur. If you are caught, the best move is to try to get your legs free, take them both to the same side of the opponent, and roll him over in that direction.

It might be one of the hardest things to get into, but once you get into the groove of it, aerobic exercise can make a huge difference in your life. There are many types of exercise that you can do, but this type tends to be the most beneficial. If for any reason you cannot attempt this yet, don’t worry, you can work your way up to it. Even if you have a disability there may be a way you can get some sort of aerobic exercise into your day. You just have to talk to your doctor about your alternatives and see if there is anything he or she might recommend.

Dynamic stretching is more complicated than static stretching and involves movements that replicate those inherent to your particular sport or activity. The movements, which may include knee lifts, walking lunges or arm swings are much better than static stretches for sports preparation. Dynamic stretching does not attempt to exceed your static-passive stretching ability – this is ballistic stretching. Dynamic stretching uses the speed of movement, momentum and active muscular effort to bring about a stretch. In contrast to static stretching, the end position of a dynamic stretch should not be held. Often, dynamic stretches are used to assist in developing neuromuscular coordination, speed and power.

Martial arts are exercises that children, adolescents, adults and even older adults can practice regularly – it is an activity that can continue through life. Unlike “pickle ball” or the “shuttle run”, school children won’t outgrow the ability or desire to practice martial arts as they get older. It is a lifestyle rather than an exercise.

Having the right martial art equipment is an important part of your training regimen. I should know. When I first began training, I had no martial arts gear at all. I used to do a lot of drills without martial arts sparring equipment and even full on fighting as part of my training! This was alright for a while, and it seemed like I could get on fine without any martial art equipment at all. I had some loose sweats, and my tennis shoes, and I was ready to go. Sure, I would get knocked about the face from time to time, because I had no gloves or other martial art equipment, but a bruise here and there did not seem to be such a big deal to me. I was fine with it. ..

There are many reasons why your resolutions fizzle out well before the year is really underway. You may have “cheated” and therefore assume it’s not worth continuing. You might not have the support system you need to keep going, especially if you’re trying to make a big change. You also might not have really defined what exactly it is you want to do so there is too much leeway in terms on what you can and cannot do to reach your goal.
Here are some tips to help you off to a great start – and carry your new resolutions through until 2008!

Getting your kid into any kind of martial arts lesson, be it boxing lessons, Muay Thai (better known as kickboxing), or one of the less combative fighting arts, will do wonders for his discipline and self esteem. However, unlike most Karate or Kung-Fu classes, studying boxing lessons will have the added advantage of letting your child get out his aggression in actual physical combat, while at the same time improving his self-defense skills.

Since we all really know that we should be getting into shape, the real question is how do we do it? There is a lot of pressure to be fit and in good shape. Governments and health organizations are promoting the benefits of exercise and being in good physical condition on television, the radio, and the Internet. If you’ve lived a fairly stationary existence where the most exercise you get is moving from the couch to the fridge and back, this can be daunting.
Finding workouts for beginners is not as difficult as one might think though. Gyms and recreational centers are beginning to realize the importance of offering classes and training sessions for those who are new to the fitness scene. Most gyms will offer at least some workouts for beginners. These can be less intimidating as you will not find the muscle bound gym rats of the stories you may have heard, but rather, you will find everyday people just like yourself. Workouts for beginners often feature a slower pace, a gentle instructor, and a welcoming environment where people of all shapes and sizes can feel comfortable.

When deciding to train martial arts you need to get all the information you can before you make the final decision. You need to know why you want to train martial arts. Do you want to train just for self defense? What moves best suit your body? What style of martial arts is best for your body type? These are just a few of the questions you will need to have answered before you start training in a self defense class.

Are all martial arts the same?  Many beginners who have not done any research can make this mistake. All they see is someone in a funny uniform kicking and punching. Then they generalize and think all the martial arts are the same. While all martial arts stem from the same roots, they are not the same any more. They are all some form of fighting art; just as the name implies.

The best martial art for self defense is the one that you can make work when actually faced with a situation. You have to believe in the style that you train. If you don’t believe that your style would actually work in a real life situation, then it won’t. If you train a style that isn’t suited for your body type, you may have trouble applying it when you need it. Listen to your body when training martial arts, but also listen to your mind. If you don’t believe in your style, your training is useless. Even if you train the “wrong” style for your body, your belief in yourself and your style will help you prevail.

When farming meets self protection.
18 Classic Shaolin WeaponsÂ
The crescent moon spade is one of the classic long weapons of the shaolin. The length of the weapon should be measured to the user. When you stand it on its end, it should measure half way up your palm when your hand is raised above your head. It is a staff with a sharpened spade or crescent moon on one end, or both on either end.
The Shaolin spade actually began as 2 seperate tools. A special spade that was used  for digging graves, and a crescent blade for weeding. Both were much smaller than the current version. The crescent blade was very small, so that you could cut roots of the weeds and not damage the actual plants or bushes around the area.  The Shaolin would commonly use these tools for farming, performing processions or burying the remains of animals that the would ecounter while they were travelling from one place or another.
The spade is unique in the fact that it allows you to slice, stab or bludgeon your opponent. The spade end is fairly heavy and allows you to parry smaller headed weapons, such as spears, very easily. And, with a blade on either end, it also allows you to be offensive as well. The crescent can be used to trap or puncture, while the spade can be used to cut the limbs or your attacker. Add the range of a long staff, and you have one the most diverse and effective weapons in the Shaolin arsenal.
Kung Fu is often a generic label used to describe most martial arts that come from China. Chinese Kung Fu is a precious treasure that belongs not only to China but to the whole world. Chinese kung fu is not about fighting but about self discipline, self respect, humbleness and patience. A few characteristic features of Chinese kung fu is the use of many weapons such as the chain whip and the use of mediation.

Kung Fu weapons are usually broken into four groups:
Projectile-type weapons such as the bow and arrow, throwing spears, throwing knives, throwing stars, etc. Firearms are placed in this category. (Don’t forget, the Chinese had gunpowder many centuries before most European countries did.)
Long-range weapons, such as poles, (with or without blades), form another whole group, as do intermediate weapons like swords, chains and short poles.
The last category is made up of short-range weapons such as clubs and knives.
Why would anyone want to study such primitive weapons? The answer, of course, is to master the art of using the weapon. Remember, “Art” is not measured by points, scores or accuracy. Art is measured on form and beauty and that intangible force we call Chi.

I am too old to learn martial arts. If I had a dime for every time one of my students said that…The fact is the older you are the better martial arts can be for you, if taught correctly. Most of my students are in their 30s, 40s and beyond. If you join a school for children and train with children, you are right, you are too old…

Sparring is a very important part of Taekwondo and other martial arts. It is highly considered as the best way to let the students know their own skills and develop their self confidence and awareness. Sparring is even considered in martial arts for its being a powerful tool for self defense. However, sparring is a physically demanding activity. It is even deadly if truly used. With this fact, it’s no wonder then that in almost every sparring training, be it in taekwondo or karate, students are required to use proper sparring martial arts gear or equipment. This requirement is even stressed under the rules of any martial art event.

While surfing around the internet, I stumbled upon something so fantastic that it immediately got my attention… In fact, I discovered something sooo amazing at first I thought it was “too good to be true” like most things are.
You see, a few months ago, I was actually doing some research on Irving Hancock one of the most acknowledged and influential Jui Jitsu experts of the last century and of all time. I noticed that most of his work was available and accounted for with the exception of one of his most important pieces of work ‘Jui Jitsu Combat’. Â
Well, this got me curious and so I started digging a little deeper and I started to send off a few emails asking questions… Unfortunately every, road I seemed to head down was a dead end… until a couple of weeks ago that is…
By a stroke of luck, I emailed my story to one of my favorite site’s webmasters… as it turned out he had an old copy of this almost impossible to find book - it was right under my damn nose. After numerous emails I finally got him to mail me his copy for more than I’d like to tell my wife about – if you know what I mean
