Heli Skiing is not for Amateurs

The first helicopter ski flights took place in Europe in the 1950s. As helicopter transport became more popular, helicopters began to be used to transport skiers to terrain that was otherwise deemed inaccessible. The sport of heli skiing is reserved for skiers who have finely developed skills and are looking for a way to push the envelope.

Can you imagine a life that makes you ache inside because you want it so much, a life for which you long? Heli Skiing takes you to the height of your pleasure threshold and doesn’t let go. It can take you to the next level of paradise. Varied terrain is just a quick helicopter ride away, and it can only be reached during a mind-blowing expedition.

Skiing And Snowboarding Facts

Filed under: Amateur Sports, Extreme Sports, Outdoors, Ski, Snowboarding — Tags: — Kosmik @ 12:41 pm

A lot of people ski as a leisure pursuit and leave the Olympic ambitions to the daredevils. Snowboarding is now very popular with the young. It seems a crazy thing to do racing down slopes on planks of wood. Having tried it myself, I know how thrilling it could be. But I still prefer skiing to snowboarding.

I have skied in many places around the world but nothing can beat Alpine Skiing when the sun shines and the snow glitters in the sunlight. I enjoy very much Alpine skiing and wish everyone could at least try it one time.

Going to New Zealand for a Ski Vacation

Filed under: Extreme Sports, Ski — Tags: , , — Jim Allen @ 1:32 pm

For those skiers who prefer the commercial resorts, the country has several on its north and south islands.  There are also private ski lodges located on the southern side of the mountains that require four wheel drive vehicles to get to, as well as some areas that require walking to get to because the terrain is too rough for vehicles.  Another type of skiing that entices people to go to New Zealand on a ski vacation is the heli-skiing and the glacier skiing.  However, in order to experience these types of New Zealand skiing, you must be at least an intermediate skier and have experience skiing on powder.

The best way to train for skiing is to ski, but snow isn’t always available. To prepare for a skiing vacation, you need to strengthen both your heart muscles and your skeletal muscles. You can strengthen your heart for skiing with any exercise that will raise your heart rate for at least 10 minutes, three times a week. However, to prepare your muscles for skiing, you have to use activities that use your upper legs, such as skating or riding a bicycle. The average bicycle rider is far better prepared for skiing than the average runner.

Tips and Advice For Beginning Skiers

Filed under: Extreme Sports, Outdoors, Ski, Sports — Jim Allen @ 5:34 pm

The snow plow - One of the basic stances that nearly every ski beginner learns is the snow plow. It’s a stance where you the front of the skis point inwards and are close to each other and the back of the skis are far apart from each other, simulating a triangle or “snow plow”. The snow plow position has two main advantages: 1) It’s a stable position and 2) It prevents you from going too fast and thus losing control.

A Ski Holiday With Your Children

Filed under: Extreme Sports, Outdoors, Ski — Jim Allen @ 6:18 pm
Many ski resorts cater to the novice skier and even pride themselves on being the place to learn to ski. These are great places for a ski holiday with your children to vacation.  Look for a resort that has an area reserved for beginner skiers only and has a lift that is slow moving to take you to the top of the learning hill.

Children will outgrow ski equipment very fast, so don’t buy new ski equipment for you children if you can help it. If you want your child to have his or her own equipment, look for used items - they’ll be much cheaper.

But in addition, you’ll find many private owners also selling their used ski equipment at eBay. eBay is a great place to shop for deals.

Skiing holidays

Filed under: Ski, Snowboarding — Journalist @ 1:09 am

You just need the courage to up to a ski resort and learn from an instructor before advancing any further. There are many places to go skiing in the United States. People can drive up the mountain during the weekday and enjoy the resort without avoiding the crowds that come here during weekends. The difference perhaps of this place compared to ski resorts located in Colorado or Utah is that the weather here is a little bit warmer. Most of the ski resorts in the United States are open all year round. There may only be a few people hanging around during the weekdays but during the holidays such as summer, spring break or even Christmas, some people would rather hang out in the mountains instead of having fun on the beach. There are also different activities such as skiing; riding a Snowmobile, snowboarding and more that will make this a fun filled vacation. You just pick the date and the place where to spend the skiing holiday and choose to spend it with those from work, close friends or family members.

People, Who Snow Ski, Must Be Crazy!

Filed under: Outdoors, Ski, Snowboarding — Jason Katzenback @ 2:50 pm

It’s so cold, it’s so wet, and it’s so dangerous? Please let me share why we are not Crazy!

For Everyone.

Snow skiing is one of the really exciting sports that combine exhilaration, fellowship, ambience and adventure, for all levels of participants. In Europe, children are being taught to ski as young as 2 years old and on the same slopes there are people over 90 years young. There are people of every nationality, race, creed and colour. There are one armed, one legged and even blind people, involved everywhere, at some level. What is the appeal of a sport that brings so many different people together, amidst the cold snow, in the sprit of friendliness and just having a good time?

Camaraderie.

As you meet your friends or join your ski school group in the queue for the very first lift of the day, there is a shared feeling of anticipation and nervousness as to what the day will bring. Every one is fresh and dry in their colourful ski clothes, possibly a little cold, but already, the adrenaline is staring to flow. Perhaps it is the first time you have met the group and with the common anticipation, being shared, you are soon talking to others, about where they are from, how long they’ve been skiing etc. Then as you share your exploits and adventure during the day, by the time the lifts close, you are already on the way to feeling like friends.

Fellowship

The air is still and the twilight is descending onto the mountain. And lights are on in all the bars, cafes and restaurants as they shout “Welcome, to all you Ski Adventurers.” You and your group answer that welcome and share glu-wein, a vodka fig or just a cleansing ale. Your faces are flushed and rosy from the day’s exertions, and as you relive your experiences, they become funnier and braver than you ever felt possible. By the time it is ready for dinner, you have all become heroes in each other’s eyes, with the quiet satisfaction and internal pride that “today, you did good!”

Ski Vacations

Filed under: Amateur Sports, Extreme Sports, Outdoors, Ski, Snowboarding — serguei@lycos.nl @ 9:38 am

Probably the best thing about ski vacations is that they can be for the entire family. Ski resorts always have beginner classes, and young children can start to ski along with the rest of their family. Most places also have other activities like snowboarding and inter-tubing. They also have rentals if you don’t have your own equipment. These can make ski vacations great fun for the entire family. If you find that no one has a talent for skiing, that’s okay too. You may find you enjoy a winter hike and a hot cup of cocoa instead.

Free Power-Packed Information Book Detailing Everything There Is To Know About Ski Mountaineering And Ski Vactions

Equipment must be kept to the lightest weight consistent with reasonable durability and adequate protection against emergencies. A light pack makes a trip more pleasant and control of skiing more certain. Even the robust man, who could easily carry much more, should always have as light a pack as possible, to maintain reserve energy for emergencies and a reserve of carrying power in case of injury or fatigue of any other member of the party. He should further consider that if he is injured, the party must carry his pack—or discard some of it.

The equipment is divided into that which is (1) worn, (2) carried in the pack, (3) included for community use, and (4) necessary for difficult climbing on rock and ice. The equipment listed first in each of the divisions is the minimum requirement for a tour of at least one night on the snow, with possibility of blizzard and temperatures down to —30° F; “optional” equipment can be added as desired. The community equipment is based on a four-man party. Variation in the number in the party using the community and climbing equipment, as well as the type of expedition, would require some changes in the items suggested. Supplementary discussion is included in the chapters on Warmth and Shelter. Refer also to the Check List of Equipment on pages 221 and 224.

Discover The Little Known Skiing Lessons Guaranteed To Have You Skiing Like A Pro In No Time!

The basic position for the snow plough turn is the snow plough’ position which must be held throughout the complete turn. The centre of gravity of the body during the entire figure remains constant between the skis. Now do not do anything more than is asked of you. First, a turn to the right. Snow plough position=basic position. The skis begin to slide. Now you move the left shoulder, the left knee and the left ski with a slight forward pressure. The centre of gravity is between the skis, the body is held erect and the turn to the right begins. Now repeat the performance to the left: right shoulder, right knee and right ski with slight forward pressure and, as you will notice, you will begin to travel to the left. The centre of gravity is always between the skis and you must never forget this. So, continue to travel in alternate turns. When the right shoulder goes forward the left shoulder recedes and vice versa. Now look back and see your fine snow plough tracks. You are delighted to find how easy it is and how successful you have been. Now go to a somewhat steeper slope where you can practise it for yourself.

Alaska Ski Vacations

Alaska, which has always been a source of awe and mystery, has some of the best skiing in the world, and the Alyeska Resort is one of the finest resorts in the state. With a top elevation of 2751 feet and a 2501 vertical drop, the area gets an average of 631 inches of snow annually.

Although this is some of the best skiing in the world, you won’t find the slopes overly crowded, and there are no long lift lines. There are nine lifts, including six chair lifts and two surface lifts, and one cable car line. There are 68 trails for beginners, intermediates, and experts, with the majority of the trails designed for intermediate skiers.

Night time skiing is allowed, which makes your ski experience more adventurous and thrilling. You will see snow capped mountains, hanging glaciers, and of course, the famous Northern Lights. This resort is ranked number nine of the top twenty-five killer ski trips by Skiing Magazine.

The season begins at the Alyeska Resort in mid November, and runs through mid April. This area of Alaska boasts the longest daytime areas in the United States, with approximately sixteen hours of daylight each day during April. During December, however, there are only about seven hours of daylight - which makes night time skiing necessary if you are going to get in the time that you want to spend on the slopes.

While surfing around the internet, I stumbled upon something so fantastic that it immediately got my attention… In fact, I discovered something sooo amazing at first I thought it was “too good to be true” like most things are.

You see, a few months ago, I was actually doing some research on Tomm Murstad one of the most acknowledged and influential skiers of the last century and of all time. I noticed that most of his work was available and accounted for with the exception of one of his most important pieces of work ‘Learn To Ski By Pictures’.
Well, this got me curious and so I started digging a little deeper and I started to send off a few emails asking questions… Unfortunately every, road I seemed to head down was a dead end… until a couple of weeks ago that is…

By a stroke of luck, I emailed my story to one of my favorite site’s webmasters… as it turned out he had an old copy of this almost impossible to find book - it was right under my damn nose. After numerous emails I finally got him to mail me his copy for more than I’d like to tell my wife about – if you know what I mean J
