Zinc nutrition

Zinc is one of the minerals that the body cannot function without. Keeping proper zinc nutrition is of essence if people are to lead healthy and productive lives. Zinc is a trace mineral and this means that it is required in small quantities in the body. Zinc is associated with immunity and people are advised to ensure that they consume it in their daily meals to boost their immune system. Zinc nutrition ensures that the body is capable of healing wounds fast.

People with a zinc deficiency will suffer from wounds that take long to heal. Cell growth also lies deeply in the availability of zinc in the system and so is cell division. This makes zinc a very important mineral to the body’s functions. Another importance of zinc in the body is that it enables people smell and taste. People who have lost their sense of taste and smell are advised to embark on diets that are rich in zinc. Zinc nutrition must be administered with moderation and there is a recommended allowance as follows; males above the age of 11 are supposed to take up to 15mg of zinc in a day. Females between the ages of 11 and 50 are supposed to consume up to 12mg of zinc in a day. 15mg is recommended for women over the age of 50 while 19mg will be best for those women who are either expectant or breastfeeding.

People looking at practicing the zinc nutrition must know the recommended sources of zinc. These sources include foods that are rich in proteins such as oysters, lamb, pork, beef, chicken, fish, peanut butter, legumes, and dairy products. It is important to know that foods such as vegetables and fruits may not contain the required zinc. People with a zinc deficiency will exhibit a number of symptoms that include hair loss, low appetite, retarded growth, and loss of taste as well as the sense of smell. These people will also loose weight and since their immunity is low, they will be prone to attacks by different diseases. Females who lack zinc will exhibit slow sexual maturity and in many cases, dwarfism is a resulting factor. Adolescents will experience delayed puberty and their skin will be rough.

In many cases, people with a zinc deficiency are prone to pneumonia attacks and their fingers will bear white spots. They will also have macular degeneration and their collagen will be reduced. Zinc deficiency has also been linked to stretch marks, short stature, strong body odors, paranoia, anorexia, depression, impotence, cataracts, and optic neuritis. Those who consume zinc excessively will suffer from abdominal cramps, vomiting and diarrhea and that is why moderation is vital. Zinc nutrition must therefore be taken seriously if people are to stay clear of these life-threatening defects. It is important to stay off alcohol as it lowers the zinc levels in the body. Milk is also known to curtail zinc absorption in the body and so people must go low on its consumption.

Zinc nutrition benefits include increased brain activity, low cases of common cold infections, healthy skin, improved appetite, and mood among others.

Clearing the Fog of Misinformation in the Treatment of Running Injuries

An hamstring pull is one of the most troublesome and stubborn injuries that runners come across. Running injuries, hamstring problems, ligament problems and Achilles’ heel injuries, are typically notoriously difficult to treat. These occur in places in the body that receive little blood supply, and healing is often slow and irregular. The latest developments in ligament healing medicine though, introduce specific approaches that could revolutionize the treatment of stubborn running injuries.

Of all the new lines of treatment for running injuries discovered in recent years, three stand out as particularly promising. The first one involves helping an injured tendon heal by injecting a patient’s own blood into the tendon. The next, called the Platelet Rich Plasma method is even more promising; it involves processing a patient’s blood to concentrate the most platelets in the smallest volume possible, and then injecting the newly derived platelet rich plasma into the injured area. The third takes a somewhat different approach. This method tries to take advantage of precise muscle movements in helping an injury heal. The muscle movements of interest in this form of healing are called eccentric contractions. This involves attempting to stress a muscle in a direction opposed to the one it tries to naturally contract in.

Orthopedic experts do not exactly agree on which one of these three approaches makes the most sense in the treatment of sports injuries like a tennis elbow, a rotator cuff injury for a swimmer or any other. And in the environment of disagreement and uncertainty that prevails in the method of choice in the treatment of sports injuries, a lot of misinformation and mythology abounds. I learned all of this tending to the running injuries I suffered in my life as a recreational runner. The kind of sports injury my body preferred to keep having was always to the hamstrings. The more I did the rounds at the hospitals, the more I realized that I could probably serve myself better: so difficult is it to find a really grounded doctor who deals with running injuries.

The first thing I realized was that ice packs and anti-inflammatory pills like Ibuprofen and even physician-prescribed injections of cortisone, all assume that the tendon concerned, my hamstrings in my case, are inflamed. They even call it tendinitis or tendon inflammation. Often enough though, as it was with me, the problem with my hamstrings had nothing to do with inflammation at all. My hamstrings were just degenerating with age. And did you ever know that pain in a tendon doesn’t really come about because the tendon is injured? Tendons themselves don’t hurt; the pain comes when the body tries to heal the area, by laying down new blood vessels.

Considering the importance of the presence of blood in a tendon that is trying to heal, some of the new treatment methods that involve the injection of Platelet Rich Plasma makes a lot of sense. The platelets jumpstart the regeneration process in an injured or torn ligament. There are major new studies being undertaken to completely establish once and for all the effect and the benefits to be had from these blood injection methods. A certain amount of vigorous exercise is also a good thing when you’re trying to heal from running injuries that affect tendons. Exercise pumps more blood into the area, and that cannot be a bad thing.

Tips On Eliminating Stretch Marks For Weight Lifting

Filed under: Sports Medicine, Weightlifting — romulus2 @ 6:27 am

You don’t have to spend a fortune when you use a cream for stretch marks. Many of you don’t ever wish to have stretch marks that’s why you are confident enough to buy some creams that claim that it can prevent stretch marks. Although testimonials show that the stretch marks cream work but can it help you?”

Seek for advice from your family members on how to get rid of stretch marks. You will be surprised that they will say contrasting things about a particular brand of a cream for stretch marks. You can’t deny that some stretch marks creams do help to remove stretch marks but not permanently. The marks are not so conspicuous after a few weeks of application.

The intensity of these ugly marks determines the potency of the intensive cream stretch marks. Some are so serious that the key substances of the cream fail to enter deeply into the skin. When you arrive at this stage, tummy tuck is the only way to remove stretch marks.

Despite the fact that these unattractive marks can’t threaten your life as compared to other deadly diseases, but they do influence the way you look. They can undermine your self-esteem and confidence. That is why skin care manufacturers are trying to promote their creams to the extend that they can offer a miraculous cure for stretch marks.

Bear in mind that the moment the stretch marks form on your body, they will stay there. The cream for stretch marks can only decrease the image of the stretch marks. They are still there but they are not so obvious to look at.

If you wish to apply the cream for stretch marks, then as long as it can restore the lost natural oils of the skin, it will have a encouraging effect on stretch marks. Other useful substances that should be added in the stretch marks cream are vitamin A and vitamin E. Some creams are capable to pass far into the skin because they have a functioning delivery system such as emu oil.

Among the frequently used creams for pregnant women are cocoa butter and shea butter. Unfortunately, not everybody can endure the distinctive odor of cocoa butter. Fortunately, you will be overwhelmed to find many kinds of creams on the shelf. For example, you can read the Revitol Stretch Mark Cream review for more information. Based on the customers’ responses, many regard it as the best cream for stretch marks.

In conclusion, an effective cream for stretch marks that can restore the beauty of the skin, then you can safely assume that it can prevent and decrease stretch marks. The creams should help to stimulate the production of collagen which can replace scarred tissue with new cells. Yet, at no time in the future should you attempt to apply any cream that has steroids such as hydrocortisone.

Six Fitness Tips to Staying Young

Filed under: Exercise Fitness, Sports Medicine — stetbooks @ 7:04 am
  1. Drink plenty of water. Studies show that drinking sufficient amounts of water daily (about 60-80 oz) will keep your skin hydrated and looking youthful. Some studies also show that being well-hydrated increases your metabolism, so you’ll burn calories better. If you tend toward constant snacking or binge-eating, substitute water for your snacks, when possible. Also drink a large glass of water about 20 minutes before a meal and you will feel more “full” and eat less. (Our bodies often mistake feelings of “hunger” that are really feelings of “thirst.”
  2. Eat a well-balanced diet. A diet filled with fruits and veggies, lean protein and whole grains provides your body with disease fighting nutrients. High-fiber foods will aid in digestion and will help move some fats through your system more efficiently. …

Weight Loss with Exercise

Filed under: Exercise Fitness, Sports, Sports Medicine — stetbooks @ 6:58 am

Lets face it – our country is filled with overweight guys who want to be thin. We try all kinds of things: from weight loss diets to lose weight exercise, but nothing seems to work for many of us. The fact is that we just can’t seem to keep the weight off. Even if we use the best exercises to lose weight, we tend to not be able to stick with them. Sometimes it starts off with an extra treat on the weekends. Some times a trip out to the local bar with the boys, and the alcohol pours the calories right on the belt line! Other times, our resolve suddenly breaks down. Whatever the reasons, our diet plans and our lose weight exercises tend to lose steam eventually.

The only way to make you lose weight through exercise really stick is to be fanatically dedicated to losing weight. This means that you must live every day as if weight loss were your most important priority. (Some day, the docs may sit you down in a small room and explain to you that because of hypertension, too much fat around the middle, or too many years of sedentary living, it IS the most important thing in your life.) You have to be in the gym at least three times a week and doing both cardiovascular and weightlifting exercises. Eliminate junk food from your life. Stick to a healthier diet while keeping your body moving.. Your lose weight exercise plan must be complemented by a good, healthy diet.

Avoid fad diets altogether. Maybe some of them work, maybe some of them don’t, but there is one thing that we all know: a good, sane, healthy diet works for everyone. All you have to do on top of your lose weight exercise is to eat lots of vegetables, a fair number of grains, and only healthy fats. You don’t have to cut out fat entirely – if you use olive oil and other vegetable oils, you should be just fine. Read food labels and watch your portion size. Make sure your food is low in the “bad” fats and cholesterol, and most importantly: don’t try to get all your vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients out of a vitamin bottle! Perhaps you won’t lose weight quite as quickly as on the Atkins diet, but you (and your liver) will be much healthier…

Muscle Dysmorphia and the 98 Pound Hercules

Filed under: Amateur Sports, Exercise Fitness, Sports, Sports Medicine — stetbooks @ 5:22 pm

Men with muscle dysmorphia have a distorted body image, seeing themselves as having tiny muscles even if they are heavily muscled. This concern can lead to an obsession with gaining muscle and definition at any cost, including over-training and using potentially dangerous supplements such as anabolic steroids.

In a recent issue of the British Journal of Sports Medicine, lead author Precilla Y. L. Choi of Loughborough University in the UK and colleagues evaluated questionnaires that measured self-esteem and body image, among other attributes of mental health, for 24 male bodybuilders diagnosed with muscle dysmorphia. Their responses were compared with those from another group of bodybuilders without the disorder.

According to the report, men with muscular dysmorphia reported greater dissatisfaction with their overall appearance, muscle tone and weight. While they saw themselves as less attractive than their peers without the disorder, their appearance was also more important to them.

The findings also suggest that men with the disorder may view themselves to be less healthy than their gym-going peers, but this finding was not statistically significant, the authors note….

Fat Loss Secrets of The World’s Best Bodybuilders & Fitness Models

Filed under: Exercise Fitness, News and Views, Sports Medicine, Sports Products, Weightlifting — bookmaster456 @ 9:04 pm
“How To Set Powerful, Compelling Goals That Will Propel You Forward and Charge You Up with Unstoppable Motivation” is one of the most powerful chapters in the book. In this chapter, you will learn what is probably the ultimate secret to burning fat and getting in shape… and it has nothing to do with diets, supplements or training programs. There’s also a great quote in this chapter from the legendary Green Bay Packers coach, Vince Lombardi…
“The dictionary is the only place success comes before work. Hard work is the price we must all pay for success.” That line does a nice job of expressing the “no quick fix” philosophy behind the entire book. In the rest of the book, you’ll learn the complete and exact mechanics of fat loss - explained on both a scientific and a practical level (which you can easily apply in your own daily life in terms of what to eat and how to exercise to burn fat).
If there is any drawback to the Burn The Fat ebook, it’s that it contains so much information, that some readers may find it a bit overwhelming. Those who are looking for a “cliff’s Note’s” quick start type of fat loss program, might be a bit intimated at first. The good part however, is that even these types of readers can feel confident and assured that it will be worth the effort because this will literally be the last book they ever have to buy on the subject.

Since glutamine is the most abundant amino acid in the body, it stands to reason that it is the most abundant amino acid in cerebrospinal fluid (the fluid that surrounds the brain and spinal cord). There are two important neurotransmitters, glutamic acid (the one that excites nerves to transmit impulses) and gamma butyric acid, or GABA, which is the one that calms down, or inhibits nerve impulses that is made from glutamine. While it is okay to be a little sore after a workout, excessive soreness can be an indication that you have injured yourself… read the full article at ab exercise.

My Aerobic Center - The Ultimate Gym

An article about aerobic centers  by Joseph Marian

The aerobic center offers all types of luxury and relaxation, complete with health drinks and light refreshment. If I want to complete my aerobic exercises and relax in a jacuzzi, I am virtually guaranteed a private facility in which to unwind. There are masseuses on hand at all times of the day and night, as well as a personal trainer who will meet with you up to three times a week, if you desire it. They also offer more exotic forms of health therapy at the aerobic center, such as acupuncture, fasting and cleansing diets, and meditation. And just because it is an aerobic center, that does not mean that it is not equipped for anaerobic exercises. Anaerobic exercises are things like weight lifting or resistance training for those of you who might not know. There are plenty of weight lifting and strength training facilities in addition to the cardiovascular stuff… treadmills, exercise bikes, step machines and the like. And then there are, of course, the recreational sports at the aerobic center. From racquetball to tennis, it is all there for the taking. Trust me when I tell you this is better than anything you could possibly have in your basement…

I Am Sure You Want To Improve Your Golf Swing

Filed under: Amateur Sports, Exercise Fitness, Golf, Sports, Sports Medicine — joe @ 10:08 am

Your ‘physical limitations’ are keeping you from making a mechanically sound and repeatable golf swing. Think just for a minute! If your body can’t make a 90 degree shoulder turn it’s a fact you will lose a TON of yardage off the tee and with your irons.

If you can’t maintain your golf posture throughout your entire golf swing you have no chance to swing consistently for 18 holes. If your core is weak you will not be able to generate any power going into impact, therefore you will see a weak shot that most likely goes ‘offline’ quickly. Can you see the picture more clearly now?

Dirt Bike Stuff

There is also equipment that helps keep riders safe while riding through competitions and practice. Helmets come in various forms and styles to not only offer a sleek look but also to protect riders form injuries. Injuries to the head can be devastating, and are very possible in dirt biking. Special eyewear is also made for dirt bikers. Dirt and debris from a ride can easily make its way into a rider’s eyes causing irritation, blurred vision and possibly accidents. Any retailer who offers dirt bike accessories should be able to offer a number of options for protecting the eyes, as well as a special cleaner that prevents eyewear fogging up. Other important dirt bike accessories protect hands. Hand guards are not gloves but they come up over the top of the hand, a hard shield to help bikers stay safe and keep riding with minimal injuries.
