Accidents To Watch Out For In bungee Jumping

Filed under: Amateur Sports,Extreme Sports,News and Views,Outdoors — Tags: , — chrisy369 @ 12:19 pm

The most serious of bungee jumping accidents can be fatal, and the majority of these which have occurred in the past have been traumas to the head, resulting from miscalculating the length of cord which was needed for safe completion of the jump. One of the best known fatal accidents occurred in 1997 during a practice session for the show to be performed at half time during Superbowl XXXI, and it was said to have occurred as a result of mishandling of the bungee cords. The show was cancelled after the accident, and instead there was a tribute to Laura Patterson, the bungee jumper who had died when jumping from the top level of the Superdome in Louisiana. There have been other fatal accidents which occurred as a result of loose ankle harness, and jumpers now use a back-up body harness as an extra safety measure.

It should be noted, however, that there have been millions of jumps performed over the past few decades, and out of these only a handful have resulted in fatal accidents. Having said this, the strict safety guidelines should still be followed if accidents of any kind are to be avoided whilst bungee jumping. Minor injuries which are quite common whilst bungee jumping include bruises, pinched fingers and rope burn, though these are really just unpleasant side effects rather than actual accidents.
