Attention and anxiety in sports performance
Author(s): Manoj Kumar Sharma
Abstract:
This paper explores the impact of attention and anxiety on sports performance, focusing on their combined effect on motor skills and overall athletic outcomes. Attention, defined as the alertness and selective focus of athletes, plays a crucial role in optimal performance. Anxiety, a state of heightened apprehension, is closely linked with arousal levels and can either enhance or impede athletic performance depending on its intensity. The paper discusses several theories, including the Inverted U Principle and Perceptual Narrowing, to explain how anxiety influences attention and performance. Additionally, it suggests strategies like relaxation, cognitive restructuring, and self-talk to help athletes manage anxiety and maintain focus. The findings emphasize that controlling anxiety and attention can significantly improve an athlete’s ability to perform under pressure.
