Abstract:
This study investigates the relationship between socio-economic status (SES) and physical activity (PA) levels among female students from the Department of Physical Education. The research aims to determine how SES influences the frequency, intensity, and duration of physical activity, as well as to identify differences in activity levels across socio-economic groups. A total of 85 female students were selected for the study. SES was measured using the updated Kuppuswamy SES scale (2023), while physical activity levels were assessed using the Mayfield Physical Activity Index (2006). The study employed a cross-sectional design, with data analyzed using SPSS Version 27. The Chi-Square test was used to examine associations between SES and PA levels. Results revealed that SES significantly affects physical activity, with students from higher socio-economic backgrounds engaging in more physical activity compared to those from lower SES backgrounds. Notably, the upper SES group exhibited higher activity levels, while the lower SES group was more sedentary. The chi-square test for independence confirmed a statistically significant relationship between SES and physical activity (p = 0.030), indicating that SES plays a crucial role in determining PA participation. These findings suggest that interventions targeting lower SES groups may be needed to promote physical activity and reduce disparities in health outcomes.
