The use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) in sports: Benefits, risks, and alternatives
Author(s): Dr. Shalini Menon and Kuwar Praveen Singh
Abstract:
Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs) are widely utilized by athletes to manage pain and inflammation from injuries and intense physical activity. These drugs are effective in reducing pain and promoting quick recovery, making them a staple in sports medicine. However, the frequent and prolonged use of NSAIDs carries significant risks, including gastrointestinal issues, renal dysfunction, cardiovascular complications, and potential delays in musculoskeletal healing. This paper reviews the benefits and potential harms of NSAID use in sports, with a focus on common injuries and conditions treated with these drugs. Additionally, it explores alternative pain management strategies, including acetaminophen, topical analgesics, cryotherapy, physical therapy, and nutraceuticals, which may provide similar relief without the associated risks. This paper explores the pharmacological mechanisms of NSAIDs, the balance between their therapeutic benefits and potential harm, and alternative pain management strategies that could mitigate these risks.
