Movement education in progressive education
Author(s): Dr. Arun C Nair
Abstract:
Progressive education is a pedagogical movement which was rooted in classical preparation for the university and strongly differentiated by socioeconomic level. Physical education in schools and colleges has become extensions of the "Competitive Achievement Model." In those instances emphasis is often on the product or on winning, rather than on the process, or on equal access and learning. Movement education uses problem-solving, guided-discovery, and exploratory methods, with the effect of individualizing learning in physical education. The concepts involved in movement education include body awareness and skills, the space in which the body moves, the effort or quality of body movement, and the relationships among body parts, individuals, groups, and objects. The theoretical foundations made through several researches proved that movement education has common objectives to share with progressive education, such as emphasis on learning by doing – hands-on projects, expeditionary learning, experiential learning, group work and development of social skills, collaborative and cooperative learning, education for social responsibility and democracy, emphasis on life-long learning and social skills. It was concluded that movement education can be introduced right from the elementary education as part of progressive education.
