Abstract:
A goalkeeper’s success in football is heavily influenced by mental toughness, distinguishing the good from the great. This study identified rebound ability, pressure handling, confidence and motivation as key psychological attributes for talent identification in soccer goalkeepers. Data were collected from 85 goalkeepers (aged 16±3) from professional academies in Kerala, India, all with over two years of experience and state-level competition exposure. Mental toughness was assessed using Dr. Allen Goldberg's Mental Toughness Questionnaire and the data were analysed through descriptive statistics, correlation matrix and factor analysis in SPSS. Findings revealed two core components with strong factor loadings (>0.7): rebound ability and pressure handling in one, and confidence and motivation in another. Reliability analysis showed good internal consistency (Cronbach’s Alpha 0.789, 0.710), confirming the validity of these measures. These attributes are crucial in assessing a goalkeeper’s resilience, ability to handle pressure and overall performance, incorporating them into scouting and training programs can refine talent identification, ensuring goalkeepers possess the mental strength required for elite competition.
