Effect of aerobic dance and zumba dance on selected physical fitness variables of students with intellectual disabilities

Abstract:
To achieve the purpose of the study, thirty (N=30) subjects were selected from the Kaumaram prasanthi Academy. The participants, aged 11 to 19 years, were divided into three groups: Experimental Group-I, consisting of ten subjects who underwent aerobic dance training group(ADTG) for 8 weeks (5 days per week, from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM), Experimental Group-II, consisting of ten subjects who underwent zumba dance training group(ZDTG) for 8 weeks (5 days per week, from 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM), Control Group-III also consisting of ten subjects who continued with their regular routines without additional training. The selected variables for the study were leg explosive power, assessed using standing broad jump, flexibility, assessed using sit and reach and cardiovascular endurance, assessed using 600m rum/walk. After completing six weeks of training, post-test data were collected, and both pre-test and post-test scores were analysed using the ‘ANCOVA’ If obtain ‘F’ ratio is significant Scheffe’s post hoc test will be used. The level of confidence set at 0.05. The results revealed that the experimental group-I and II showed a significant improvement in Leg explosive power, flexibility and cardiovascular endurance, attributed to the physical activities with aerobic dance and physical activities with zumba training program. However, no significant changes were observed in the control group for the selected variables.
