Thoda-traditional martial art and cultural heritage of Himachal Pradesh
Author(s): Ramesh Chand
Abstract:
Thoda is a traditional martial art form rooted in the cultural heritage of Himachal Pradesh (India), particularly popular in the districts of Shimla, Sirmaur, and Solan. It blends elements of archery with dance and theatrical performance, evolving from ancient martial practices linked to the mythological Pandavas and Kauravas. Practiced during the Baisakhi festival in April, Thoda involves two opposing groups, Shathis and Pashi engaging in mock combat with bows and arrows fitted with blunt wooden tips. The objective is to strike below the knee, while defenders attempt to evade hits through agile leg movements. Accompanied by traditional war music and vibrant crowd participation, the sport emphasizes precision, coordination, and physical agility. Played on a marked court to ensure safety and discipline. Aim of the study is to preserve indigenous martial art knowledge, safeguard traditional physical activities and to promote cultural tourism attraction as part of intangible cultural heritage.
