The Interplay between release angle and release velocity in javelin throw performance: A biomechanical analysis of intercollegiate athletes
Author(s): Anand V
Abstract:
Javelin throw performance depends on various biomechanical factors, with release angle and release velocity being critical determinants of throw distance. This study examines the relationship between these two variables and their combined effect on javelin performance in intercollegiate male athletes. Data from 10 athletes during competition were analysed using high-speed motion capture, focusing on the release phase. Pearson’s correlation and multiple regression analyses revealed that release velocity (r = 0.52) had a slightly stronger correlation with throw distance than release angle (r = 0.47). Together, the two variables explained 41.8% of the variation in throw performance. These findings underscore the need for training programs that enhance both release velocity and angle to optimize performance.
