A study on the menstrual cycle and issues affecting rural teenage girls in the Paschim Medinipur district of Narayangarh

Abstract:

Background: The onset of menstruation is seen as a significant turning point in a teenage girl's development. Menstrual cycle patterns and onset ages depend on a number of variables. Many teenage girls experience dysmenorrhea, heavy bleeding, irregular menstruation, and many other issues after menarche. In order to identify issues, the current investigation was conducted along these lines. Goals: To investigate teenage girls' menstruation patterns and issues in the rural area of Paschim Medinipur district.
Objectives: 264 girls (16-21 years old) from Paschim Medinipur's Narayangarh district were chosen for the prospective observational study.
Methods: 264 female students (16-21 years old) were chosen for the prospective observational study using the purposive sample technique. Statistical analyses were done using SPSS 16.0 version.
Results: Total 264adolescent girls had attained menarche. The mean age of menarche was 13.5 (1.0) years. 119 (45.7%) of adolescent girls reported premenstrual syndrome. 118 girls (44.69%), was dysmenorrhea. Girls have reported using sanitary pads 68.19% of the time when they are menstruating. During their periods, 8.34% of females reported wearing their old clothes. (83.10%) had regular menstrual cycle and 16.99 had irregular cycle.
Conclusion: For teenage females, menstruation is a significant life milestone, and menstrual issues are prevalent in this demographic. Menarche occurred at an average age of 13.1±1.0 years. The most prevalent menstruation symptom among the 1.5 teenage girls was stomach pain of the teenage girls, 62.3% had dysmenorrhea. During their periods, 33.5% of girls have reported using sanitary pads. During their periods, 41.6% of girls have admitted to wearing their old clothes.
